Fred99:

Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, West Virginia and Florida have the highest median age population...

Yes while that partly explains the horrific case fatality rate in Italy (so far), it doesn't mean that older people are safer where the median age is lower.  Fewer may die because there are fewer of them - but the only possible benefit is that it will slow down saturation of the healthcare system - but not by much.  Older people (and/or those with health conditions) are at just as much risk here or anywhere once containment fails.

Agreed. My comment was purely to list the higher media age population states which would imply they are at a higher risk of an elevated number of deaths. Some states, on the other hand, have very low population density - Vermont for example. Florida is on the top five list and a high-density population of ageing citizens.

Possibly, and a gut feel, is that when CT becomes a reality and not a "news discussion item" , this may tighten up the lax attitudes of some?

Nope, it won't happen.

I used to live next to the type of young riff-raff described by others in this thread. They are disengaged from mainstream society and from the media, so they wouldn't understand what this is all about. They might have heard that there is a virus going around, but they would have no idea of the implications or their social responsibilities.

It will be interesting to see how the public health measures are policed, and whether the resources are realistically available to do so.

Sadly, you are probably right.

If someone is looking to make some money, find a large parking lot, put up an inflatible movie screen or hang one from a building, and bluetooth stream the audio.

Mercury News Drive-ins having a moment in the time of social distancing

“It’s not about the movies anymore. It’s about having something to do.”

The drive-in theater, long a dwindling nostalgia act in a multiplex world, is experiencing a momentary return to prominence.

With nearly all of the nation’s movie theaters shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic, some drive-in owners think they’re in a unique position to give moviegoers a chance to do something out of the house while keeping distance from others. This weekend, some drive-ins aren’t the only show in town. They’re the only show in the country.

Hospitality owners should be enforcing a lot of it with the rules out now. And perhaps educating their patrons too...

Got the a message with a permit included. Never thought I'm system relevant and my Team Red is on duty from tomorrow regardless of current stage of lockdown. So I can't "stay at home" no more but I'll see what I can do of use for the system.

Please explain "message with a permit included", "Team Red" and "use for the system"... Without knowing your area of expertise is hard to get the whole picture.

Sorry - I don't know any details yet. What I can disclose is that I'm a professional engineer and capable of flying aircrafts. The permit is for passing barreers in case lock down becomes enforced. Two teams are established to stay on duty without physical contact in between. "Relevant for the system" means essential to keep on working when others are locked down.

The govt has banned indoor gatherings of more than 100. Does anyone know if party being held in marquee would be considered an indoor venue? A catered event occurred down the road was inside on and it looked like a significant number of people there.

Queensland now over 200 cases.   Whether NZ is similar to Queensland in important ways I don't know.  However, our population at just over 5 million is nearly the same as Queensland.   Queensland and NZ have a big tourism industry.

Batman:

like this article, i was told japan don't test people, and we all expected Japan to have massive mortality,

but it was one of the first countries infected after china and nothing seems to have happened. no panic, no airport checks, no nothing checks, no people walking around in hazmat suits, no shutdown, no physical distancing, life just went on as normal. Now they are prepared to win all, each and every medal in the Olympics.

maybe we need to learn something from them.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/03/20/national/coronavirus-explosion-expected-japan/#.XnXKhKgzaUk

“Italy’s mortality rate is almost triple Japan’s,” said Yoko Tsukamoto, a professor of infection control at the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido. “Part of the reason is if you get tested, you get quarantined, so it means that they don’t have enough beds for relatively nonsevere patients.”

I don't understand this. Apparently Japan has pretty much controlled covid-19... infections are low, deaths are correspondingly low. How did they achieve that without an aggressive response?

And there's no particular need for hospital beds for people who have been tested and don't (yet) have severe symptoms. Tested and quarantined surely means go home and stay home???
