Batman:  Singapore will shut borders. no non residents to transit or enter

https://www.rappler.com/world/regions/asia-pacific/255454-singapore-tourist-ban-coronavirus-cases-rise-march-2020

This does not surprise since although the rate of growth there is small compared to Europe & the US, it is still fully exponential (update plot below).  No sign of tapering off - ditto also for Australia, UK, and USA (& only possible slight initial tapering in the case of Germany and Japan).  While Singapore have been successful in limiting the rate of exponential growth, they have not managed to reign in the exponential nature of the growth.  That clearly could not be allowed to continue.

In their case much of the growth is imported (a result of exponential growth elsewhere in the world).   Thirty of the 40 new cases in Singapore on 20 March were imported (https://www.moh.gov.sg/news-highlights/details/seven-more-cases-discharged-40-new-cases-of-covid-19-infection-confirmed).

Plot updated to 21 Mar 2020. Edit (corrected source for USA)

NSW Health has confirmed 26 people from the Ruby Princess cruise ship have tested positive for COVID-19.

The ship travelled to Fiordland (11 March), Dunedin (12 March), Akaroa (13 March), Wellington (14 March) and Napier (15 March).  The cruise was shortened after visiting Napier, for weather reasons, and the ship returned directly to Sydney and passengers disembarked on the 18th.

How about some morbid ads on TV and epsecially social media:

"Hi I'm Sally, I was sick and and it turned out to be Corona virus. I didn't self isolate - I infected Granny at our Sunday dinner, she got sick and nows she's dead because of me. I killed Granny"

If its not sinking in you've got to up the message.

+++ German carmakers are also considering how to support the health system that groans under Corona. "We collect ideas of what can be done, including humanitarian aid," said Porsche CEO Oliver Blume. "We see ourselves in a social duty." BMW showed willingness to provide technical help: "If we were to receive appropriate inquiries, we would of course be willing to support here." The production of component parts for such devices with 3-D printers would also be conceivable there. VW also wants to provide 3D printers to manufacture components. "We are in contact with governments, associations, clubs and authorities to determine the specific needs." Prototypes have already been printed. "Of course, medical equipment is new to us - but as soon as we know the requirements and receive the corresponding blueprint, we can start."

But medical technology in Germany is subject to high standards and has to meet strict regulatory requirements. "Most of the materials are specially designed and not standard components," says the Lübeck medical technology company Drägerwerk, which is one of the leading manufacturers of ventilation machines. The technology of today's ventilators (electronics and software that control the pneumatics) also differ from the operation of an automobile manufacturer, said a spokesman. +++

“Any chance of a link?  Masochism.

Thankyou for candid opinion.  Yes I have the remote lifestyle block already.  Aware that skin SCC was still a risk, hence vit D supplementation; internal tumor is more the psychological bogyman.  Life has been outrageous though a tad too interesting for my liking... have come close to death many times in almost every conceivable way.  Guns, germs, steel, cars, bandits, avalanches, blah blah it's a long list. A white shark had a go at me kayaking just last week; third close shave with the grey suits.  Strength in adversity and all... but it's not easy to see any permutation of future which is particularly relaxed or enjoyable.  However predation is beneficial overall.”

- Germany: From now on meetings of more than two people in the public are prohibited to slow the spread of the coronavirus. This comes down from 6 people. Exception is still familiy members living in the same household.

This widely agreed and accepted to be necessary in the current situation.

freitasm:

These are trying times folks. Some really don't seem to grasp the seriousness of these events.

Speaking of which, here’s a classic: a relative of mine has recently moved into a flat. They are planning a flat-warming party next weekend. Apparently one of the flatmates doesn’t want it to go ahead so they’ll stay elsewhere.

What a cliche of the stupidity of youth.

My unsubtle texts saying what I thought of this, and containing links to some further info, have unsurprisingly gone unanswered.

Batman:

from what i've observed people get their information and advice on social media, and then do whatever they feel like.

wonder why lockdown in china works, lockdown in italy did f all.

China was a forced lockdown, Italy was a free for all. Go to work, go to any shop (till 6pm) It was hardly a lockdown. It ALL comes down to the people doing the right thing. Plus the lockdown was leaked hours before it happened so they are scarpered, taking it with them.

If by "coming up" you mean going from one city/region to another, I hate to break this to you: if you are going to call out others for being selfish, the government is also asking that people minimise non-essential travel. A birthday celebration for your sister probably isn't essential.

A friend (with two young kids) just received information from their GP practice that one utter moron with symptoms (since diagnosed as Covid-19 positive) went into the clinic despite all the warnings and exhortations not to. The authorities should prosecute this person and do their utmost to have him or her sent to jail.

Im fine with our MoH response. But your suggestion is one that we haven't put in place, unlike other countries. It has to happen.
