Does anyone know what will happen about Warrant of Fitness and Rego? My warrant expires next week for example, but surely they'll be no one open to do it (it was already booked in for a date after the lockdown starts). I assume we'll be ignoring those expiry dates for now, but I wondered if anyone heard anything official? I couldn't see anything on NZTA website or their Facebook yet.

Geektastic:

So how do people working at home deal with IT issues if they’re self employed unless there are appropriate shops available?

It’s not for people to decide what laws they feel like obeying. PC shops are not essential businesses. And one would wager that most self-employed people would not rely only on one device.

Very interesting, the AA is closed.. but with no warrant or rego do you still have insurance?

All uncharted territory, would assume it will be fine.

Clarification on takeaways and food delivery services like Uber eats. I know some were confused or not sure.

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/lifestyle/2020/03/takeaway-shutdown-will-food-delivery-services-be-operating-during-the-level-4-alert.html?

"Food delivery businesses including those that make prepared meals (My Food Bag, Woop, Hello Fresh etc) are considered essential services and are still allowed to trade and deliver," says Restaurant Association CEO Marisa Bidois.

Fast food deliveries and Uber Eats eateries will stop operating, as they are classed as non-essential, she says.

I've found the police pretty relaxed around if either are recently expired, I'm sure they'll be understanding, unless the car is obviously dangerous and un-roadworthy.

Batman: China vs NZ and why we will be in lockdown for 5 years because we just cannot understand border quarantine

Right. So the guy in this video left China "to check New Zealand measures", landed in Auckland, took a small plane to Blenheim to "self-isolate" on his dad's home for one night, then returned to China. All the way around the world, possibly spreading the virus, just for the sake of... what? Nothing?

To me he's a clown.

New York Times: Dollar Gains as Pandemic Drives Global Demand for Cash

The US dollar rose against major currencies on Monday as fresh declines in global stocks and worries about tightening liquidity amid the worsening coronavirus crisis accelerated the flight to cash.

The dollar rose against sterling toward its strongest since at least 1985. The U.S. currency hit the highest in almost three years against the euro.

The U.S. currency approached an 11-year peak against the New Zealand dollar as the country prepared to enter lockdown for the next 48 hours to contain the virus. The greenback also rose toward a 17-year high against the Australian dollar.

...The dollar rose 0.45% against the pound to $1.1671, approaching the strongest since at least 1985.

The dollar initially rose against the euro to the strongest since April 2017 but then pared gains to trade little changed at $1.0707 per euro.

The greenback closed in on multi-year highs against the Australian and New Zealand dollars as the economic costs of self-isolation triggered the largest intraday decline ever in New Zealand shares.

...Investors have been liquidating positions in safe-havens and other riskier investments to keep their money in US dollars due to the uncertainty caused by the epidemic.

Major central banks have ramped up efforts to ease a global dollar funding crunch, but the U.S. currency remains in demand due to the high degree of uncertainty about the unknown flu-like virus.

I am sure a call from a "Microsoft support" scammer will come soon enough. 🤪

So on my morning walk this morning I found a moderately-sized spec build development had a decent number of workers (roofers, builders) already at work today; I really can't see how they meet the definition of 'essential services', given the homes they're working on are in a relatively early stage:

  • Any entity involved in building and construction related to essential services and critical infrastructure
  • Any entity involved in building and construction required immediately to maintain human health and safety at home or work
  • Any entity that performs or is involved in building and resource consenting necessary for the above purposes

This comes across as a company trying to desperately to minimise losses - while I get that from the business's perspective, equally it's setting a bad example to the wider population. I wonder how (or even if) this kind of flouting will be policed?

I also noticed a coffee cart was still operating; assume that's covered by JA's comment that "takeaway services must move to close their operations", from which I read that they'll need to be closed by the time we hit level 4.

I guess I cannot drive to see my daughter in same town? Follow 2 metre restriction where there. Doesnt seem so. But I can go to supermarket and hang around strangers?

Someone replied, but to reinforce: you must remain at home with the people you live with or the people you were when the Level 4 starts. You are not to go around "visiting" family, friends. You are allowed to go to the supermarket to buy food or to a petrol station to buy petrol.

Is it clear? Or do you think it is too hard on you?

This is really low, Stuff:

Every few months I get a request from an ad company asking if I want to run these ads. These are at best misleading, at worst a scam. They basically have these clickbait (or others like "Which is better - Spark or Vodafone? Be in to win an iPhone").

If you click that you actually go to a page where you enter your details (name, email, phone) and "be in to win" - if you read the fineprint it's ONE phone for Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and other countries. The competition is run for 12 months or sometimes more. Your chances of winning this one phone is very small - not worth giving up your contact to spammers.

These ads pay less than cents per impression and you see these on Stuff, NZ Herald, Metservice. It's just greedy from these media companies.

My guess is just as the alert levels were gradually raised in the next few days we'll hear that all arrivals into NZ will be treated like the Wuhan group. They'll be taken direct from the airport and need to spend 14 days somewhere.

My guess is we havent done it yet  due to the numbers coming in and the fact it takes time to ramp up for this type of operation.

Or it could be anyone showing any signs of symptoms goes.

If NZ does stamp this out we will continue to get people arriving for months/years until a vaccine is available.

We cant keep the country in lock down forever while leaving the gate partially open. ( places like Africa/Syria will never eliminate this until we have a vaccine)
