Are we going to see rna vaccines coming for the common cold and flu? I'm surprised there's not much talk about it.

clinty: A very good ( but long) article from Charlie Mitchell (Science reporter) in Stuff

He spent three weeks in the NZ anti vaxx online community

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/300397872/covid19-three-weeks-inside-a-rabbit-hole-of-dangerous-misinformation

He covers alot of ground and provides reasons behined why anti vaxx think what they do. Also provides information and links to debunk some of the more prevalent theories

Read in bed this morning - very interesting and worrying too.

It is these people that are going to keep us in lockdown/s. Even that escapee idiots mother says to throw the book at him.

Came here to post this exact link.

Well written and easy to digest and gives a pretty good insight into the world of the stupids.

Is there a link I can follow re the development of vax variant boosters and their progress?

Are non mRNA vaccines still aiming to do similar? (I saw a video interviewing a rep from Sinvac and their belief on its speed to market for variants, but not sure I trusted that video)

From the early onset it was indicative that the advancements made with funding and discovery boost that the covid-19 support got, _should_ help give more insight to standardise the development

And the hope was yes, it would help them greatly as the need to adjust for each seasonal variation may be better battled by attacking the proteins not the viral makeup.

Moderna also hopes to close in on trial of their edition.

I don't get why these people go rogue ...  maybe they know they are talking rubbish but enjoy the attention ?

Money.

Yep. It worries me who/what is funding the mis-information campaigns and why. It seems to have quite a bit of money behind it...

I jokingly said to someone quite a while ago, that the antivaxxers were probably the fruits of a Eugenics campaign wanting to improve the human race by wiping out stupid people who didn't believe in science/vaccines. I totally made that up.

But.... Someone/something appears to be funding the mis-information.

I was quite surprised to see that the UK vaccine regulator is not recommending the covid-19 vaccine to be generally used for kids 12-15.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/jcvi-issues-updated-advic
e-on-covid-19-vaccination-of-children-aged-12-to-15

They note that the benefits of the vaccine exceed the risk for children in this age group, but say the margin in not enough to enough to justify a recommendation.

Oddly they only seem to consider the individual, not wider benefits of reduced transmission.

Note that NZ's regulator medsafe has approved the vaccine for this age group.

For NZ, the most relevant is progress by pfizer / Biontec

They have released that they are developing a delta specific booster / vaccine, but little information on progress is available.

I suspect they want the orders for their current Conformity vaccine orders / shipments to keep flowing (incl 3rd doses), until they are ready to move on the delta specific formulation.

Next big bit of info out of pfizer is the results of the 5-11 year age group trial. Hopefully this should come this month.

Brilliant, thanks Scott.

It will be interesting to see over time if the mortality drops and the efficacy increases the further ahead of the virus we get. At what point would the virus be considered "surrounded"? I mean do we just target the variant "hit" list?

Or given the modelling on mutations, is it possible to be somewhat down the vax dev path on these models and just tweak them when they actually occur to the real world eventuated mutation?

What are the time frames for the 3rd booster, and would NZ likely get supply of which is a new booster targeting Delta? (curious as to what we can expect time frame wise).

It feels so much less depressing talking to people about something which for me just seems so obviously effective.

The Mrs just makes these concerns some of my elderly friends have as not answerable, as they are not even close to how the mrna vax work. ie you cannot answer something that doesn't exist.

Yes this is something getting me down, I dont believe this, but lets just say, if this was one of the deliberate conspiracies', they are getting the intended outcome. Lowered aging society, us vs them (antivax vs science).

I know they have been "talking" about new laws to censor the internet from macliious disinformation that impacts the global community's health/mortality.

I say do it (my opinion), Im all for freedom of speech, but not in times of civil emergency, ie pandemics. But then the anti vaxxers would turn around and say, I told you so, using it as fuel to their narrative of fear, but if their voice is lowered, those who were sucked in by it, will have more access to facts ie peer reviews, mrna-wiki etc.

A very fine line civil/human rights of freedom of speech. Some countries have that on lockdown already. But for us that don't, I do not see another way to stop the mass social media/YT commentary that could be costing bulk lives. Make spreading factless propaganda that costs lives, illegal.

Just an average persons 2c on how to handle disinformation.

"For the vast majority of children, SARS-CoV-2 infection is asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and will resolve without treatment."

Is that still true for delta?

Re transmission, i thought vaccination doesn't affect transmission of delta?

i think you will find that this is commercially sensitive information plus they need trials and data. the first 2 doses of Pfizer had only just gotten full FDA approval ?last 2 weeks and all the others are still on emergency provisional approval or something like that.

people inc us are still trying to give the first 2 doses, and boosters are not so important at the moment.

get your 2 doses, and see what variants are out there in 6 months, then look at boosters.

I think Samuel L Jackson reading the Stay the F at home poem had a better ratio of NSFWedness 😀
