For the people running android, my pass disappeared from my device. Seems to be a known issue. - so would be a good idea to check if it is still on it a couple days after you install.

Do you have a link to where this is documented as an issue? My pass is still there, with a lot of other loyalty cards loaded into Google Pay.

Sorry, I should have used the term widespread, rather than known.

Examples of people having the issue:

This article calls out the clash between comments made by the PM and Minister for Covid-19 response, and what is on the covid-19 website.

"Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Covid-19 Minister Chris Hipkins both say venues requiring Covid-19 vaccine passes will be able to check them visually instead of using an official app if they wish to.

But the Ministry of Health’s website for the verifier app disagreed, saying vaccine passes would need to be scanned to “allow entry”."

This was covered further in the press conference today.

Businesses doing anything beyond a visual check is optional. MOH webpage is being updated.

Apparently they will keep it under review.

Ridiculous.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Making fraudulent ones just got a whole lot easier, for places that don’t scan.

No wonder conspiracy theorists have a field day

One day its "you must be vaccinated to keep everyone safe" and "we must keep the vaccinated safe from the unvaccinated"

and all of a sudden its just basically going to be done ona trust basis

feels like they are just trying to keep everyone happy?

I would expect that presenting a fraudulent pass would be penalized like using any other fake ID would so perhaps they will just make an example out of a few that they find?

Is it not the case that laminating a QR code print out makes it harder to scan because of the reflective surface? Rather like the problems of scanning QR posters that shops have taped to the back of windows or glass doors.

Scott3:

Tried out the verifer app on the S10.

Uses the main camera - and scans the (un scaled) print out QR code quickly as long as you hold it the right distance from the phone.

Cannot use the provided placement guide. The phone camera simply cannot focus that close. - would be a really quick fix to move that guide though.

...

Not the intention that the QR code has to fill the area enclosed by the guides.  Only that the QR code be within the guide area.  The guides need to be that size for 'in field' use; that is for quick scanning without the need to precisely align the vaccine pass and scanner.

I just ran a few tests using the QR scanner with a printed copy of the vaccine pass (full scale, 24mm x 24mm QR code).  Printed on an older colour laser printer, cut out, folded, then laminated.

  • with the QR code roughly central to the guides, it scanned fine as long as the QR code took up roughly a third or more of the guide dimensions (ie. ~one third of the x & y dimensions = 1/9th of the area)
  • with the QR code close to one corner of the guide area, scanned fine so long as the QR code was about a half the guide dimensions
  • with the QR code roughly central, it scanned fine with the phone tilted up to what must have been ~45 degrees to the plane of the vaccine pass card (despite the card being laminated).  Done indoors so no harsh sunlight reflection (was near a window but overcast sky).
  • Also scanned fine with the QR code rotated relative to the vaccine pass card.

Oops, slightly miswritten.  Should have read

  • Also scanned fine with the guides in the Pass Verifier app rotated relative to the QR code on the vaccine pass card.

From observations It seems to be a Samsung thing. And one of 2 reasons

The Google pay update last week reset it.

Having smart unlock enabled..so when safety measures are removed it panics and deletes it

I think it's an Android thing as I have a Nokia (Android 10) so not Samsung specific.  Also don't have Smart Lock enabled as I only use fingerprint and/or PIN to unlock.  My shortcut did disappear after last week's Google Pay update but has randomly disappeared a couple of other times for no apparent reason.

Got to try out the vaccine pass on my phone for real at the hairdressers this morning.

Only slight hiccup was that the young receptionist spent about 3 mins scrolling through pages of apps searching for the pass verifier before giving up and asking the business owner - who located it almost instantly!  Suspect the receptionist didn't know which icon was the verifier.  Odd though as it was 11am, so I was not the first customer.  Perhaps the owner scanned others in?  Everything else was up to scratch. The receptionist raised the issue of needing to scan in.  Also, two doors open with a good flow of outside air through the room, and everyone wearing masks.

Visited in-laws at a rest home yesterday (they are there for a few weeks, recovering from a car accident). We were asked to show the passes but they didn't verify.

I also enrolled in-laws (we have their documents and I have admin access to the email domain) and printed their passes so they can have with them in the rest home.

I'm a little nervous about the printed passes as I'm not sure why they designed the QR code to be so small rather than using the full width of the space?  I think the design team tested on their high end >$1,000 phones and lost sight that people working in hospitality with cheaper phones in dim light will struggle.

I've printed my parents and mine out in HQ mode on my laser printer to eliminate ink bleed.  Ran the verifier app over each and although did verify, it took a few moments for my phone to focus close up to get the QR in frame with plenty of natural light.  After the first scan it did admittedly do the others much quicker.

Anyone know if you can redesign them? I gather as long as the QR is scannable and other text remains unchanged it would be fine? But I guess the persons scanning could kick up a fuss.

I know elderly family will be using the paper ones, and they're so flimsy, need to have them laminated but then you may have issues scanning due to reflections etc.
