Gym today in chch started scanning and recording to membership records of those who have a vaccine pass ready. Some issues of scaning taking to long being a pain in the butt to focus on some members little printouts. Just ended going with just sighting the pass and marking the membership as vaccinated.

I'm a little nervous about the printed passes as I'm not sure why they designed the QR code to be so small rather than using the full width of the space?  I think the design team tested on their high end >$1,000 phones and lost sight that people working in hospitality with cheaper phones in dim light will struggle.

I've printed my parents and mine out in HQ mode on my laser printer to eliminate ink bleed.  Ran the verifier app over each and although did verify, it took a few moments for my phone to focus close up to get the QR in frame with plenty of natural light.  After the first scan it did admittedly do the others much quicker.

Are you holding the phone too close?  The QR code does not need to fill almost all the guide area.

I had no difficulty scanning a laser printed & laminated standard 24x24 QR code in low light conditions using my S8 phone. Sure, originally $1000+ but now an aging mobile phone.  Phone was tilted probably around 15 - 20 degrees to the plane of the card with the QR code.

With the QR code taking up only the ~centre third of the guide area there was possibly a second or two hesitation (quicker second time).  However, no noticeable hesitation in verifying the pass with the phone held a bit closer so the QR code filled the ~centre two thirds of the guide area.

Yes, I can imagine QR codes printed with some inkjet/paper combinations could be problematic.  I

Anyone know if you can redesign them?

I don't see why not. Just take a cropped screenshot of the pass and print it out full page.

Printed in-laws and daughter's codes yesterday using an Epson ET-2710 in high-quality mode. The verifier app had no problem scanning them.

I believe it is also meant to be preluded with 'excuse me but do you consent to your status being held on file for the purpose of stored verification and ease of access' with some form of approval input :)

But I bet most wont be.

I know elderly family will be using the paper ones, and they're so flimsy, need to have them laminated but then you may have issues scanning due to reflections etc.

As per earlier posts, I have had no difficulties scanning my laminated card with the QR code. Originally tested with the card near a window on an overcast day, but have subsequently tested in low light and outside in direct sunshine.  No problems in either case provided the QR code takes up roughly the central third - half+ of the guide area in the pass verifier app.  Had no problems with reflections, despite the card being laminated.  Possibly reflections could be more an issue with a larger QR code - large card more likely to be distorted?

Have also tested in a fully darkened room (doors closed, no windows).  Worked well there also as the pass verifier app has a torch button below the guide area.  Of course, no go in the fully darkened room without the torch on!

An unlaminated paper 'card' is not going to last long!

This is totally how the system is expected to operate, esp for Gyms that will have another form of check in system operating.

Les Mills have been collecting vaccination statuses of agreeable members and tagging it to Member's existing bar code tags for the last week,

Once the traffic lights roll out, and have shown your vax pass once, You will simply be able to just use your regular les mills bar code as usual.

Looking at my car rego card, that is a lovely high contrast print fairly robust even on thin card.
All that infrastructure up and down the country as well as existing mail out service.
May have been a missed opportunity to use existing infrastructure for those that need quality hardcopy.

Does anyone have any tips on getting these things laminated? Most of us don't have a laminating machine at home, so I'm guessing the only option is to go into a photocopying shop and get them to do it?

Seems one obvious option.  Eva888 also mentioned some pharmacies may provide them?

Warehouse stationary will laminate an A5 size for $2

Personally I wouldn't bother unless I had the ability at home or work, or I thought I was going to get the pass wet. Just print say 12 of them and swap every fortnight. Pass is only valid for 6 months.

Or print 50 and leave them on your desk at work for anyone who needs one 🤣

I played around with scanning and yes did find the QR only being in half the guide area was much easier.  I did have three QRs to test at the same time, first was sluggish but the next two were much more responsive.
