I've struck a problem loading the pass into Google Pay.
Vodafone Smart E11 "Covid phone" (only used for scanning in). Android Go 10. Google Pay installed.
Open vaccine pass email in Gmail (problem occurs using both app and browser versions)
Click on link, opens in browser, says "Must be opened with Google Pay".
Click on "Open in Google Pay". Google Pay opens.
Google pay shows the vaccine pass logo and some text.
Click on the "Continue" button.
The Google Pay app closes immediately.

I've tried copying the URL and pasting it into a Chrome window, it goes to api.certificates.covid19.health.nz but ends up at the "Must be opened with Google Pay" page with the same result.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or do I have to set it up to just display the PDF?

Is the phone completely updated as well as all apps?

Have you got a passcode, pattern or fingerprint set as security? I think GPay requires at least one of these to be set to operate.

Assuming all the apps are up to date etc..., based on my experience I think ironically it's the Gmail app itself causing the problems.  I've struck it on two different phones where tapping the link within the Gmail app tries to open in a browser rather than Google Pay.  If I tried to copy and paste the URL in the email from the Gmail app I found the URL was different than mouse overing it on a desktop mail app.

What I ended up doing is loading the email via a webmail interface within Chrome then it was smooth sailing.  I initially tried via webmail in Firefox my default browser but failed.

Or perhaps the default app for some links was changed before. Clearing the app associations for the browser should ask for you which app to use and give the option of Pay or Chrome.

The phone OS is up to date.

Security PIN is set.

Attempting to copy the URL via the GMAIL app fails because it copies the URL for the image of the button. Copying from the web browser version gets the api.certificates.covid19.health.nz URL with the encoded pass included. Pasting this in a Chrome session results in the same behaviour - goes to a pay.google.com page saying that "Your COVID card can only be added to Android phones using Google Pay", with a button "Open in Google Pay". Clicking this brings up Google Pay with a "My Vaccine Pass" logo and info about the pass, with a "Continue" button. Clicking "Continue" immediately closes Google Pay and returns me to the browser page.

Google Pay appears OK when opened explicitly. "Open supported links" is set to "Open in this app", and "Supported links" is set to "Open pay.google.com and other URLs".

If I click on the link in the email in the Web version of Gmail, I get the option to open in Chrome or Google Pay. Selecting "Google Pay" brings up the Google Pay app, with the aforementioned Covid pass logo and "Continue" button, but the app closes when "Continue" is clicked.

I'm wondering if the pass might be malformed. It's my wife's pass and phone, I'll try adding the pass to my phone (in addition to mine, which applied OK) and apply my pass to her phone.

... Nope, trying to apply my pass fails the same way.

Have you restarted your phone and opened Google Pay then to check if the pass is there?

It's not a Windows phone. 😁
Rebooting didn't change the symptoms.
... uninstalled and reinstalled the Google Pay app too.

For those using Android:

Add your COVID Card to your Android device - Google Pay Help

Even if you don't have Google Pay on your phone you still can add the pass - a longer process to find it though.

I found that once previously it seems. Loaded my rewards cards there that were meant to auto pop up (but don't)

Just after I write a guide for everyone at work. Dammit

Just got mine, I don't understand how people find it so hard? Get the email, has a box for add to Apple Wallet or Google Pay, click > done.

Double tap button on iPhone, cert is there with my Credit card. Printed a copy for my phone case. Simple. Perhaps being an apple user just makes it easier....

Thanks for the link as I don't use Google Pay & wondered if there was any point in loading the certificate in.
I don't like the Google privacy small print though on that page. I'll just stick with the PDF on my phone.
I've cropped the PDF & have a shortcut on my home screen so I really don't see any advantage to having it in Google Pay.

Correct... my wife had to enable this to be able to install the passport on her Android phone.

Yhe biggest hiccups is people not realising the buttons are a clickable link in the email body.
