martyyn:
martyyn: One of our daughters best friends is from an AV family.

Said friend turned up at school today unvaccinated and unmasked because her Osteopath father has given her an exception certificate.

Friend freely admits she has no medical grounds.

None of the kids in their social group are happy about it.

Well sucks to be that kid but best that the others sever all contact with them.

Can I ask with the Government dropping the 'Work from home' mandate have any GZ people been WFH and told to come back into the office?

Started at a new job last month, expectation was in the office 2-3 days a week. As soon as we switched to Red, offices closed, 100% WFH.

Am I alone here?

Am I wrong in being appalled they've demanded everyone return and then specifically request approval to WFH?

It depends on how strict they are being if you request approval to WFH. If covid case numbers surge, and you feel unsafe using public transport and can't walk to work then it would seem a bit insensitive for them to decline a request to WFH unless they have a good reason.

It's probably very dependent on your role, and if you can be effective in that role when working 100% from home. Some jobs can, some can't.

If you can do your job from home, then you are 100% valid in being appalled and it's time to look for a new job.

Thank you everyone. I am not too fussed honestly, however the principle of removing the blanket authority and making people reapply has resulted in twice as many staff in office than last week.
Yes if necessary 100% of our work can be done from home.
Mgmts reason for getting everyone back is so we may be socially interactive amongst ourselves and new staff. .. During a pandemic.

Now living within 300m of an LOI, I thought it was a bit close when it was 1.2Km one way and 2Km the other.
Vaccinated so just taking things day by day.

Yeh, life in the supercity.

Data points from random locations: Talked to a transport driver in Kerikeri on the weekend and he mentioned a big problem up there was how blase everyone was about Covid. He said you could tell in a group of people who the Auckland tourists were vs. locals because the locals would be unmasked, not social distancing, not scanning, while the Aucklanders were diligently doing all of the above.

Chat with a friend in Austria, they're down to 3% positive tests based on massive testing, symptomatic or not (he said he had a stack of test results about the thickness of a telephone directory, the testing regime is continuous). In Germany 1/3 of all tests were coming back positive but they're not doing blanket testing like Austria but only where there's a suspicion of it being present, they also had around a third of all staff in their (excellent) medical system doing nothing but Covid management, with standard procedures deferred due to lack of facilities and staff.

I have a question about exposure risk and would like to know what people think. I am not asking for medical advice.

I am elderly, 77 years and my doctor has said I have COPD, though I don't have major symptoms and I have never used the inhalers he prescribed. I am otherwise reasonably healthy, not on any medications and  I keep active doing undemanding chores outdoors. I am fully vaccinated and boosted.

I live on a rural property and have little contact with others, except once a fortnight or so when I go to the supermarket. However, I am facing the prospect of having to attend several  events soon that involve significant numbers of people. I feel a strong sense of obligation to people I am close to and I don't want to let them down, but I am concerned about Covid exposure risk in regard to my age and condition. So how worried should I be? The events are a birthday, a wedding, and yes, a funeral.

I have neighbours who very roughly fit the profile you're giving and they've said the minute the numbers get high enough, which could be as soon as this week or next, they're going into self-isolation. I don't think anyone will feel let down if you tell them that, because of your risk profile, you won't be able to attend.

I'm close to your demographic, so I have some idea how you feel.

IMO, it depends on how soon "soon" is, where you live and where the events are, and what the Covid numbers look like at that time.
I'm actually planning on visiting friends & family around Wellington / Kapiti Coast this weekend because I'm worried it might be the last 'safe' opportunity for a while. But if the numbers look horrendous on Friday, I'll just cancel.

If by the time the events are due there are a thousand or more cases a day, I expect that the events may well be postponed/cancelled or taken on-line - I've already 'been to' two on-line funerals :(
Even if the events are still on, the organisers will well understand someone (y)our age being unwilling to risk attending.

If they're really expecting you to come and will be badly disappointed by a late no-notice cancellation, maybe you give them a heads-up now that things are looking 'challenging'?

Cross fingers and hope for the best

Overnight I have developed a bad persistent cough and headache and my chest feels like it's been jumped on. I am going to get a test today.

Your mind plays funny tricks on you in this situation. It certainly did with me a few times. Hopefully it's all ok.

It's an entirely personal thing and no one should be offended if you decide not to go.

I can only tell you about my experiences of the last 2 years.

My experience of being exposed to covid is you are somewhat unlikely to get it, especially if you are outside. Inside and unmasked you are significantly more likely but still it's more likely you don't get it than you do, especially with only a few hundred cases in NZ. We had someone in the house catch it a few weeks ago and no one else got infected. There's a huge element of luck.

The problem is even if you only have 2% chance of getting it there are still 2% of people who get it and some of them have nasty consequences. With vaccination the most of the consequences have become much much less severe.

From my experience I know a lot of (vaccinated) people who have had covid recently, all recovered very well and are doing ok. My neighbours mum in the US, who is a similar age to you, currently has it and has very mild symptoms. In 2020/early 2021 everyone knew some someone who had been to ICU, it's not happening the same this year, even with the higher case numbers.

I'm firmly in the vaccinated and done camp - I wear masks, follow the rules etc but I'm not staying home and don't avoid crowds etc but that's me. It's a personal decision and your level of comfort will probably change once you start seeing peoples experiences around you. Mine certainly has changed a lot over the last 2 years. I'd suggest you take your time to decide on how you want to behave, you can always change your mind based on what's going on.
