Its so great that our Government has solved all the country's major issues that it now has time to tackle more obscure projects...

Lets at least be honest . Its a minority driving these changes .

Nope, I don't think so. I'm sure the majority would be happy if there was no tobacco in NZ at all.

Ive seen the stupidty of some of the anti-smoking crowd & the levels of hate they will go to.
It only takes the slight smell of a ciggie in a car park or open area to trigger them

[snip]

No ciggie drove anyone to violent rages .

I think you've hung yourself with your own rope there. lol

Double standards P*ss me off .
Back in the day I knew a few 24year olds with liver issues due to drinking . No talk of making booze unavailable as years go on .

[/quoted]

OTOH, we taxpayers aren't paying through the nose for a health system to keep them alive. And no much alcohol someone else drinks, it won't make "me* sick.

[quoted]

Some smokers actually enjoy their ciggies , just as drinkers enjoy their wine or beer. If they want to smoke, let them do it .
None of the same vitriol over booze . Id rather be around smokers than angry violent drunks .

[/quoted]

No problem there, but I'd rather be around non-smokers than smokers or angry violent drunks. And *I* don't have to breathe in *your* smoke.

[edit: >85%] of the population don't smoke and I think it's fair to assume almost all of those people would prefer not to be exposed to second hand smoke for a number of reasons.

A useful thought experiment for a smoker is to imagine they are sitting in a beer garden. A person with a spray bottle comes along and starts spraying a mist of a known carcinogen that smells foul, is an irritant to the eyes, nose and lungs and makes their clothes and hair stink until washed.  Do you want to sit next to that person?  Should they even be doing that in a beer garden surrounded by other people?

Guess Vaping will become the new thing. I haven’t seen any mention of it, other then improving regulation on it, so guessing it’s the new smoking.

Seems to be among young people.   I know several youngsters who have never smoked but do vape.  I wouldn't be surprised to see the govt eventually lean on nicotine concentration in vape products as well.  regulation of some of the flavours could come in time as well if there ae issues inhaling products that are approved for ingestion.  I'm sure someone is doing research with vaping lab rats right now.

While you might hear a lot of noise about how this smoking restriction is the end of the world, I'd suggest for a majority of NZ won't really really don't care and will go along with it.... Bit like covid restrictions.

Reading comment sections following articles in overseas media is full of anger and comments of socialism and how this is the end of the world just reinforces how the world is a strange place....

my god, its as if just sighting a smoker will give us cancer

I go to your beer garden. I dont like the smell of beer or wiskey. Alcohol is a known carcargen
So you need to take your drinks back into the bar as the sight of them offends me .
I dont want the smell of spilt beer on my shoes either

Thats what it amounts to .
rational responses seem too hard for the anti smoker zealots ...... just ban it .....
because we all know how trying any sort of prohibition DOESNT work .

Its the if I can even smell a slight hint of it..... I know people with that attitude
I dont smoke btw .

double standards
booze ok , smoking not .

The smoke that really P*ses me off is the winter night stench from local homes & their coal & wood fires . It gets quite bad were I live .
That smoke, also OK it seems .

Smoking is an addiction. I'm all in favour of doing all we can to avoid people becoming addicted.

I've had a smoker call me a c*nt to my face because I was evil enough to give him a lift somewhere but not let him smoke in my car.

I pulled over and told him to GTFO.

Then he was very apologetic and said he didn't know what came over him. I do. Addicts will say and do almost anything to satisfy their addiction. Usually it's just simple abuse because there are no sane or rational reasons why any mentally competent person would still be smoking 75 years after it was proven to cause heart disease and cancer.

Plus it stinks. My previous car stunk for literally years because I let a smoker get in on a rainy day one time. ONE TIME!

Ban it.

Meat nauseates me. Can't stand the smell. It causes heart disease and cancer. It is bad for the environment. Ban it!

Not OK in the case of the Great Fog of London in 1952.

"Government medical reports in the weeks following the event estimated that up to 4,000 people had died as a direct result of the smog[1] and 100,000 more were made ill by the smog's effects on the human respiratory tract. More recent research suggests that the total number of fatalities may have been considerably greater, with estimates of between 10,000 and 12,000 deaths."

Campaign on that. Smokers do try to make excuses and do the "whatabout". Anything but address the central issue of the health impacts of smoking.

Ever watch old movies from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s? Google the cast of those movies. The vast majority are dead and they died of cancer or heat disease.

They didn't die from meat. Cigarettes killed them.

Try it. We did it one night while watching Turner Classic Movies. Everyone was dead. Even the children in the movies.

Try the 1920s. They are all dead. What does it matter what they died of?

Your argument is overly simplistic.it is not always about the health issues.
