I have had a colonoscopy and endoscopy+colonoscopy.I.e. 2 separate sessions.

Both times I had the full sedation. Wasn't actually offered the option of no sedation.
Went to sleep while they talked to me and woke up a few minutes after it was over.

They gave me a regular bread sandwhich to eat - It was the last gluten I have knowingly eaten in 12 years.

Walked out under my own power around 30 minutes later. It was pretty quick.
You have to have someone you trust to pick you up.
You can't drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day, but you should otherwise feel just fine.

The gastroscopist told me I appeared on visual evidence to be coeliac when he chatted with my wife and me before we left (confirmed by biopsy result later).

I'd go for sedation and bugger the lawns.

Gurezaemon:

I had a gastroscopy in Japan 12 years back without sedation. They applied some numbing gel and a strange bondage-type mouthpiece so I couldn't bite down. It was deeply unpleasant, but not actually painful. It was all over pretty quickly.

I can't speak to colonoscopy without sedation though. Sounds like a PITA (sorry).

Four of your words confirm my decision!

I've had two colonoscopies, one with full sedation and one without.

Honestly, I preferred the no sedation. I was able to watch the camera feed on a screen and ask questions. It was really interesting.

The gastroscopy sounds worse without full sedation but I haven't had one myself.

Id be the same as well, but a tube down the throat, yeah nah. Today is zero food day. Just had a black coffee, was almost a treat, but hunger pains a bit less now.

Ah yeah, my one pro tip for the prep would be to book the procedure for as early as possible so that the night before is a touch grim but you don’t have to spend a day hungry.
I hope it goes well!

Lying there with the tube down the throat, unable to move my jaw, only make guttural grunts. And the doctor making light conversation about how nice everything looks in there and pointing things out on the screen.

It made the concept of having a conversation while getting dental work look easy.

All done. Last I remember of gastroscopy was them popping a mouthguard in. Had moth spray and IV conscious sedation.Woke up when he had just started colonoscopy, that was interesting watching the video as he talked through it to the nurses. Doctor has a wonderful bedside manner. Now booked wife and I into Coeliac seminar on Tuesday, next after that is 6 weeks later, so all the ducks lined up today.

Lunch was great , first food since 6pm Tuesday, hope I didnt overdo it given empty stomach. Sedation still active, but feel ok.

Did they confirm the Coeliac Disease?

I assume so if you booked a seminar....

Do I need to welcome you to the club?

Yes, confirmed.

They asked if my Southern Cross plan included the seminar (they do at $100 per time), but as my sis went to a nearby medical practice for that, I called them, they do it every 6 weeks, fully funded so booked on.

Club Member Tally = +1 !

Im not worried about the GF changes, but I was anxious about a ballpoint pen size tube down my throat, but I was nigh nighs during that. I go next Tuesday to the seminar, so looking forward to that. I know a bit as my sis works for DHB and got it bad we talked for a long while recently, and from you guys here, and Dr Google.

For me it was the social life which changed the most.

Anything involved with eating outside your safe space (home) becomes stressful.

If it's not stressful, you arent taking the strict GF diet seriously.

If someone wants to go out and eat (Restaurant/Cafe/Bar), you have to really do your research and ask questions.

You always end up being the 'handbrake' factor and for me I mostly prefer not to be asked these days.

I dont know how many times people have told me they have made or prepared something that is 'All gluten free'. You then have to cross examine them and in 90% of cases, there is something that they havent thought of. Last time for me was someone who made a lovely cake and told me it was 'all GF ingredients'.  After asking all the things that went into it I had to ask them what brand of baking powder they used. It was Pams brand. Edmonds BP is GF, Pams BP contains wheat. Cake was no good for me and they were shocked.

(For the record, some brands of 'Cornflour' are actually 100% wheat starch. The Pams brand only just started labelling their product as "Pams Wheaten Cornflour" very recently after years of just being just labelled 'Cornflour' on the front! (Wheat was listed on the small print on the back))

You have to build a quite comprehensive knowledge of which products are ok and which are not, then seem like a PITA asking lots of questions.

Family events are ok because I always have my own food or feel happy enough asking lots of questions. Surprisingly, the grandchildren are actually very supportive because several of them have Coeliac friends and are always asking if various foods are Gluten Free.

I remember a work do a few years ago, where the organiser had checked that they had safe gluten free options and were assured that there were. Some fries came out and I was told they were 'gluten free'. I asked if they were fried in a dedicated gluten free fryer. The waiter came back from the kitchen and said 'the chef says they are fine, because the high temperature will have destroyed any gluten from the other items'. I didnt eat anything there.

I always try and work out what is the simplest GF menu option and least likely to have been 'contiminated' (even accidentally). I seldom trust a dish that 'can be made GF' as I know how busy kitchens can get and how easy it would be for the 'substitutions' to accidentally be missed. Eating at non peak times where they arent so rushed is helpful.

Yeah - Its a bummer....

My experience is exactly as robjg63 described. I can relate to every sentence.

Only diagnosed in 2020 so at least I had a good thirty odd years...

Anyone here tried using a breadmaker to make GF bread? Between when I was diagnosed and now, there seems to be a continual growth in GF products, and "normal" products where they switched from wheat flour to generally maize flour. A New World seacrh shows me many baking goods that are GF, and importantly, Xanthan Gum and Kaur Gum seem freely available

A quick look at breadmakers, they seem to have a Gluten setting now. I had a breadmaker a long while back, so I'm keen to get off supermarket GF loaves. Not just the cost, the texture is rough
