I don't personally share the pessimism. Omicron is an upper respiratory infection, much like the other four coronaviruses that are already endemic.

The next few months will be difficult, but for the remainder of our lifetimes it will circulate at low levels every winter and cause minimal disruption. Coronaviruses don't mutate at the same rate as influenza, so mutations will slow down as the global community achieves more immunity.

I think this should be done with soonish for sure, the issue is our lifestyles, growing population, density on and other factors, mean other pandemics could present themselves at any time.

I long for the day that this nightmare is over

Not wanting to downplay Covid too much but there are people on here whose families have survived brutal dictatorships, total war, and genocide. Compared to what some of our parents and grandparents went through, this is an inconvenience. For starters, everyone would be about 99.9% certain they'll wake up OK tomorrow...

I never got to know my maternal Grandfather and my grandmother with two very young children to care for at a time when widows got very little help because of the flu pandemic. My family lost people in the concentration camps in Europe.

Yes I am very worried. It is very easy to glibly say 99.9% will wake up tomorrow when getting covid 19 is not a death sentence. My daily reality is that very scenario. Try living with that reality for now 2 years.

Edit; And we have both Omicron and Delta variants circulating

This is why the WHO wants rich countries to make sure poor countries get immunizations and not to hog them all, otherwise we will keep getting variants which may prolong it. But the antivax people just don't get how important vaccination is, and how we need a very high percentage, they seem to be more about me me me.

That's usually the case, but this one is different it seems. Immunity doesn't last long. New variants appear as more and more people are infected. So having it circulate endlessly represents a very real risk. Going back to 'normal' would be denial of that risk ....having already lost millions of people in 2 years because 'normal' was bad and wrong.

To learn nothing from this would be ....very sad, really.

An episode of a generally excellent Australian podcast called Coronacast on this topic is worth listening to - How do we sidestep the next pandemic?

Like so many things, apparently way cheaper to put in place measures to stop such pandemics than to respond once they break out...

Agree. Putting in measures is a waste. Say my lawn has poor drainage (which it does) I can out in measures tomorrow for $xx. Nothing has changed. What a waste.

I can spend $xx later when it floods, a nice result. But its already too late. Nice result but the plants are gone. The issue is any Govt wants votes from people that want a result now.

Ok so this is starting to get seriously beyond a joke.

Got a text this morning saying processing of my swab on the 16th has been delayed and they expect to be able to get back to me in the next 72 hours!

My sons symptoms are significantly improving and I have been symptom-free 4 days.

My daughter now has a runny nose/sneezing.

Not really sure to do, potentially we all need to isolate another 10+ days if she tests positive (She didn't get tested with us as she wasn't symptomatic).

Wondering if we all queue up for a RAT this morning....

Yes queue for RAT.

i would not expect to get a result more than 5 days after a PCR test.

I too got a text this morning saying another 72 hours.

I got swabbed on the afternoon of the 19th (Pukekohe).

I am now symptom free  over 24 hours and suspect all I had was a bit of a cold.

Himself has been symptom free the whole time.

I am inclined to resume my normal life with masks etc.

Here are a couple of articles that are well worth reading. The first explains that viruses are actually essential to all life on Earth.

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200617-what-if-all-viruses-disappeared

This McGill University article discusses various theories about the evolution and progression of viruses.

https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/covid-19/do-bad-viruses-always-become-good-guys-end

Finding these came about as a result of me wanting to know if there was any point in diseases that kill their hosts.

Well, that was 3 hours of my life I am never getting back. In the stinking heat with a sick kid.

I am now seriously pissed that RATS aren't available much more freely.

In the queue for getting our RATS, which was run stupidly inefficiently, my son got his negative result via text. I'm still waiting.

3 hours to get RATS is totally unacceptable. With the personnel they had, they could have processed 2-3 times as many people as they were.

Downside of us all testing negative is that this could all start again from scratch next week if any of us get symptoms or are close contacts.

When you read this article and some of the comments it's pretty obvious that PCR testing and contact tracing are pretty well a waste of time with the current infection rates.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/matthew-hooton-did-health-officials-mislead-pm-and-public-on-testing-capability/OT2F3MQFPEDD5OPAG34LJBS5J4/

One of the telling points is testing capacity reduces significantly once the infection rates rise as batching tests together is no longer practical and all tests need to be done individually.

RAT tests are really the only way to go now, but we don't have enough of them.

The waits were long here on weekend

Now, Down here, rumour has it once you get there. They advise children and parents can park and walk into some drive through
Were walking the line finally yesterday after it blocked traffic and triaged.

If I could have had a RATS last week I would have been able to attend work for at least 4 working days more. It's so frustrating.

Totally avoidable. I'd have been prepared to pay quite a lot to get them.

Just got a text saying I am negative. YAY!

Perhaps my swab was in a batch that was all negative and no further processing was required.
