The cooking thing will be interesting. I've been home with a broken hip (snapped the top of my femur) for six weeks already, another six to go on crutches, my partner decided to move in. Which is lucky, I traditionally travel for work during the week, so very rarely cook. Now I can make a cup of coffee, but I can't take it anywhere!

As for the West Auckland Trust thing, that surprised me when I first moved to Auckland (North Shore) and went to a party out West. Went to a supermarket to pick up some beer, walked round and round until I asked someone if it was in a separate part. She laughed and pointed over the road to liquor store and said no supermarkets have it out West.

I think the aluminium smelting relies on a continuous process. You can't allow the pots to solidify. NZ Steel is probably easier to shut down temporarily.

I am sorry to hear of your troubles. I am not sure what I can do to help, but do you have some support people to assist you with your most important tasks?

I have to say that as the reality of the lockdown starts to hit, things like takeaways (as ridiculous as it may seem to those that don't regularly indulge) will be a really hard thing to do without when stuck at home, isolated with the family, but otherwise expected to work on as "normal"...

A takeaway can be not only convenient, but sometimes the only way a family can eat something really interesting (I'm thinking Ethnic takeaways here, not Fish & Chips). I don't know how to cook Indian food or Thai curries. I know I could buy facsimilies of these from the Supermarket but they aren't the same.

I just hope that the restaurant and hospitality trade rebounds sufficiently after this lockdown, so we can all enjoy a nice meal out.

Now is a good excuse to try some new cooking techniques. The Thai curry pastes from the supermarkets are pretty great, and easy (basically add meat, veg, thai paste, coconut cream to a pot and cook). Give it a go and see how things end up.

Hit the herbs and spices section and use a cook book. You will be pleasantly surprised how convincing your output is.

Ideally I'd love the time to do this, but the reality is I am still working 7-10 hr days five days a week while in lockdown, so the only thing that changes for me is a lack of commute and huge inconvenience - I don'y magically have time to be cooking any more than I ever did...

Cooking tasty food takes as long as cooking other types of food. Personally, I always make time in my schedule for food, I guess I have a touch of the labrador in me :-)

The facsimiles may not be exactly the same but for time poor chefs they can be blimminn handy.

Thanks for all the replies... interesting to find out about the pizza places. But coronavirus can live on food once its cooked, so it becomes a question of do you trust who you can't see prepping the food... After alert level 3 was announced and seeing my young neighbors decide to have a party, nope :/

So yeah the bbq slow cook is certainly on the to do list xD

I might start a Geekzone cooking show helping GZ'rs at home learn to cook :) I could start with some basic Indian, Thai and Chinese dishes :)

Otherwise, it would seem, subscriptions the following year might drop off some :)

I warn you though, I make Gordon Ramsey look like a pussycat :)

My wife is an excellent cook and as a result she finds it very difficult to get me to go out for dinner. Folks have often said she she enter Masterchef, she says no as she only cooks for pleasure. I also stopped going out for meals after being treated badly in a few establishments because I was in a wheelchair. I don't really like takeaways. Every so often I abuse my body with KFC but always regret it after and I have never got the attraction of McDonalds even their coffee is horrid.

I had recently started going out as my mobility improved but that is now on hold.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

We are very sorted for simulating takeaways at home. Freezer full of venison, fish, crayfish, shellfish and a bit of duck. I'm in the habit of making and freezing meals anyway, as life can get very busy at short notice.

A few of my favourite takeaway places do 'cook at home' retail and I've been slowly accumulating pies, dumplings and curry sauce since it appeared to me things would go pear shaped.

I work in essential industry. I can honestly say this is the most difficult time I have ever worked through. No time to cook. Even sleep is limited/difficult. Laundry situation is getting dire. Getting my flu-jab today. Should have some side effect symptoms tomorrow that keep me away from work for 72 hours 👍

Something I don't understand ... My local dairy and my local service station both do takeaways. Both will stay open but will they be allowed to sell takeaways? I don't plan to buy (the paper wrapping is high risk IMO), I'm just curious.
