Just noticed after todays iOS 14 install that there is a QR Code Reader within Settings > Control Centre. I placed this into the Control Centre. Thinking now I can QR code scan directly from my phones locked screen. NOPE. All I get is "no usable data found". But the same QR code scan works from within the actual NZ COVID Tracer app. Therefore there is NO linkage between Apples QR Code Reader and the NZ COVID Tracer app. ☹️

 

There has never been a linkage between the MoH / MBIE Location codes and it being a URL you can open. It was always a JSON encoded QR.

Today I visited a Countdown with my wife (I hate supermarkets). A few metres before the entrance I unlocked my phone and put it upright - I walked towards the QR code and the phone read and confirmed before I even got there. Basically I walked in without even stopping.

I mentioned this to my wife and someone behind us said "Lucky you, my phone can't read these things"

Sometimes mine works right off the bat, and other times it takes several seconds to get it in the right position (iPhone 8).

I have the same, if have the app open while walking I can scan it while going into a store without slowing down.

The most frequent mistake is people are too close, or the store has laminated the poster but it isn't perfectly flat so has a glare... so I say pull back a bit or try further away on an angle and it works.

@Finewine, the QR reader you see now is just a minor extension to the camera app that has been able to read URL QRs since ages.

There were 8 beta's released so you would think that serious developers would join Apples Developers Program to test out their app's on a soon to be released GM version.

After a few hours gardening (pruning/leaves etc) around the property I went to the landfill to dump it all, and found the QR poster way up high on the side of the weigh-in/pay booth.

I told the operator there was no way I could reach up there and wouldn't it hold up all the traffic?   She just laughed and said that's because 90% of the traffic mid-week is commercial trucks, so they put the poster alongside their cab windows, but on the weekends they shift it down lower 😄

Told not to worry because they had additional posters at the tip face and on the various recycle sheds .... which they did.

Apple is launching a new QR-code format that uses both visual codes and NFC to access App Clips quickly.

It reads QR codes that consist of an embeded URL, same as it always has. The MoH codes are not a URL, so require the specific app to read them.
