I had a phone call from the surgeon yesterday.

He said the biopsy using the prostate removed during the surgery confirmed the cancer diagnostic. It also confirmed it was intact, so this plus the PET scan results point to cancer being contained.

He's confident the surgery allowed him to remove all cancerous tissue.

I now have a follow-up consult in February with some blood tests to keep an eye on things.

Mauricio, that is brilliant news.  I hope it all continues to be positive, both for you and for your family.

geoffwnz   Good that your results were negative. Hope it stays that way.

Unfortunately, one of my fit and active much younger workmates had blood in his pee. It turned out to be kidney cancer, and one kidney was removed. Sadly, this was not the end of his problems, and he is no longer with us. A real wake up call for the guys at work.

geoffwnz:

(aside from the 30km MTB Taupo Cycle Challenge event - 3rd in age group, 25th overall)

Will be interesting to see what the retest scores on the bloods will be in a few weeks.  Hopefully back in my normal range again.  Apparently I'll have a consult with the urology dept to make sure the Dr was on track etc.  Good that he's happy to get a second opinion from a specialist rather than assuming he's picked up everything.  I like a Dr who is aware of their own knowledge limits.

That certainly ticks the box for "vigourous physical exercise especially cycling" amonst things that can temporarily elevate PSA readings.

Yeah, given I am an Ultra runner and endurance MTB rider, that's a thing.  Though, in this case, the symptoms started pre-event, not post event.  So the jury is still out on whether that ride was a contributing factor or not.

Also shows that just being fit and healthy is not a preventative.  Very much helps any potential recovery and fighting off illnesses but not a protective blanket as many would think.

Just had MRI this morning. Blood and urine tests booked for tomorrow morning. Off to the urologist next week to find out why PSA level has risen again after two years. Was all clear last time so hopefully nothing bad shows up. Fingers crossed.

It could be just an inflamation or something else. But good to check. Good luck.

Slghtly tangential but if you have had any imaging performed at Pacific Radiology, Auckland Radiology or Bay Radiology you can access them online from this link

I had a quick look at my ones (routine Ultrasound) and the reports and images are Greek to me:-( I suspect that some IT stuff we talk about would appear the same to others outside our industry. That sort of highlights other non IT people's understanding of IT is when it's second nature to us.

Saw the urologist last week and everything is fine on MRI and urine test. Nothing abnormal showed up so just need to keep having annual blood test.

I had a call from my surgeon just before Christmas about the final biopsy results with the actual removed tissue.

The biopsy confirmed cancer. The prostate was intact, and this with the PET scan results seem to confirm it was contained and did not spread.

I have a consult in February with more blood tests and scan to confirm this, but initial expectation is that it's gone.

Turns out my urology consult didn't require my presence.  Dr consulted with urology.  They determined that the issue was a "simple bladder infection".  One would think I'd be pleased at the downgrade but given the original option of prostate infection or cancer landed on the infection, I was already in the realm of "oh, infection, nail it with antibiotics and we're good".

Follow up blood tests requested for March to see if the PSA level is back where it should be.

Had a blood test last week, and saw the results online, with a follow up consult with the surgeon today.

The numbers show a virtually non-existent PSA, and I got the all clear.

The surgeon will follow-up with PSA tests every six months for the next couple of years, then moving to once a year after that, which can be monitored by the GP.

Basically, cancer-free now.

(Note: radical prostatectomy with intact prostate and no spread means the chance of recurring cancer is very small, but can never say never. Chances are I would likely die with it if it ever came back).

That is a most excellent result. I am so pleased for you. That will be a huge weight off your mind and that of your family.

Are you going to do something cool to celebrate? Throw yourself out of a perfectly good plane (with a parachute), or something else you've always wanted to do?
