The system failed the two women concerned, those who attended the funeral, those that have had subsequent collateral contact and all New Zealanders. The whole border management has been an abject failure that can be circumvented at will and worth. There needs to be accountability.

The first 'failure' is on the part of the two women.
& lack of personal responsibility.
They knowingly traveled from a known Hotspot - & had symptoms. (Which they tried 'passing off' claiming they were caused by a preexisting condition.)

An intelligent person (or one who cared about 'living people' & the financial/livelyhood cost to society this virus had caused) - would have made the personal decision NOT to leave quarantine & would NOT have even applied for an exemption. (Knowing they had symptoms)

Personal responsibility/choices comes first.

They clearly don't care about all the suffering and economic chaos we have paid as individuals/a country. - putting their so called 'needs' ahead of the very evident risks to NZ society/country.

In my opinion - they do owe us an apology!

Batman:
Is attending a funeral bringing benefit to the one who has passed, the person attending, or the next of kin of the one who passed?

They're rituals all humans celebrate - differently as it's subject to customs, religion, and laws (ie not releasing bodies for immediate burial etc where post-mortem is required - if that doesn't meet religious beliefs and custom, then tough bananas).

Even animals grieve - it's not unique to humans - thus probably coded into us, not something we learn.

I'm not disputing that. People make sacrifices due to covid. Some can't see their baby being born. Some close their business they have worked night and day as long as they can remember. Some risk their lives to treat sick people. Some, maybe, can't attend a funeral in person?

This needs to be taken seriously, it really does NZ cannot withstand another level 4 lockdown.

What did they do wrong.....

The part where knowing they came from a pandemic hotspot and yet failed to disclose/ask for testing despite "mild symptoms" is a good starting point.

The Test they took in Wellington was part of their agreed plan to allow them to travel to wellington, so they knew they were going to be tested...  the Ministry said it was OK to be tested in Wellington rather than before they left Auckland...

Wow I'm glad someone has discovered this. Sounds very much like a she'll be right approach to quarantine. Now hopefully it can be fixed. Now who is responsible for this?

So next question: how many people did these two mingle with in quarantine who have since been released?

you would be really upset if you had a day to go, came in contact with these two and had to go back into 14 days quarantine.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Its been stated there are protocols, they get checked often, they get checked when leaving, supposed to get tested before leaving, they were let out with no test and no checks "I have issues but it must be my existing issues" thats what failed. tested = failed. Check for symptoms, had symptoms but still let go. Rules are no use if the ground zero staff dont follow them

I think they don't get tested when leaving, they get tested 4 days *before* leaving, IIRC, at 10 days. That makes sense, so if they're positive you get the results before they actually leave.

In this case, I guess there wasn't 4 days notice of their leaving; the compassionate release was approved, and off they went.

Compassionate is being thrown around a lot.

I'm sick of compassionate people.

I thought I heard Dr A say that people are usually tested on exit. Given the way travel was managed they seem to had to travel, so just in case keep away from everyone and test in Wellington. To me, the key is who allowed them to leave with no test and with symptoms, someone did. Nurse? Nurse Manager? Dr A? he has apologised and said he will fix it. What he is fixing is what the issue is. A Nurse slipped up or or Dr A say they can go, treat them as infected, just in case?

I thought it was at 3 days and 10 days. The MoH website doesn't specify, just says that you will be tested.

But, as I said, it doesn't make sense to test someone as they're walking out the door. By the time you get the results, they could be anywhere, and have had contact with dozens of people. So testing a couple of days before exit would be a Really Good Idea.

The more I think of this, I feel Dr A allowed this as it was needed NOW, risk is super low, but just in case drive straght down, dont contact anyone we will test you there. It backfired. The risk to the rest of us is still super low, lower than a AUS travel bubble would have been Winston, by a mile. I really cant see a nurse forgetting exit checks. I know from the video it was last minute, unsure why, so I figure, the odds were super low, but we will manage these travel arrangements just in case. But then again Im sure I read that they funeral was delayed, so why the rush? I feel we will hear what really happened and by whom at 1-30. PM is miffed, Clark is miffed, Dr A says sorry. I feel he authorised this, so no other nurse/party was at fault

Rikkitic: Those struck with grief can usually rely on a small number of close family members for support. They don't need a church-full of acquaintances and passers-by.

A good friend of mine "attended" the funeral of a close friend of his on the weekend via video streaming. His thoughts were read out via video, we had tea with him beforehand. Not the best way to do it under more normal circumstances, but c'est la guerre.
