Had a blood test last week, and saw the results online, with a follow up consult with the surgeon today.

The numbers show a virtually non-existent PSA, and I got the all clear.

Congratulations on the excellent result! Time to smell the flowers.

"The lower limit of reporting is <0.05" That reflects the lower limit of the test method. Your result could be lower but they can't tell.

I went for a molemap recently. 20% discount with AA membership. There were no issues. In hindsight I was very relieved when that came through and it's given some peace of mind after the topic being in the back of my mind for a long while.

On the financial side it would have been slightly cheaper to draw a circle around everything I could find and then visit the GP to assess. Anyway, the molemap thing provides a good health record, initial assessment and search is usually provided by a nurse very experienced in the area, then followed with an expert pathologist review based on the digital photographs, and those are retained as record for future comparison. Molemap is a marketing name I think they're really looking for all possible abnormalities.

I credit this thread 100% as the key influence to action this. Thanks team!

Haven't posted until now and typing on my phone in hospital..

Got diagnosed with low level prostate cancer several years ago.

Was on the public monitoring system (quite good really).

Had a follow up MRI at labour weekend with a phone call at the end of November to say there was a 'suspiciois lesion' and a new biopsy required.

I went back to the private specialist I saw 3 or 4 years ago. Thankfully still paying expensive surgery only cover.

Had another biopsy. Shadow was at the top of the prostate. Quite unusual.

2 days before Xmas was told it was high grade cancer but seemed confined.

Xmas shutdown didn't help the timing, but had a camera inside my bladder and all looked ok.

Review of the biopsy confirmed urothelial cancer. Not good. But apparently very very rare to only be on the prostate.

Experts were consulted in NZ and UK - Possibly elsewhere.

Drew a bit of a blank on any established plans. That cancer is known to start turning up in other uro locations.

CT-PET scan confirmed it was still confined to the prostate.

Referred to a another specialist who said you have one good chance of shutting it down completely.

Did I mention a non related tumour was found on my right kidney?

On friday I had my prostate, bladder, lymph nodes and one kidney removed.

Just changed my first ostomy bag and have a scar from pubes to under my ribs.

May need chemo depending on biopsy of the bits, or as a precaution.

A week (or two) in hospital and some further weeks to recover.

My estimate of the bills the insurance are getting is about $120,000 so far.

They seem quite upbeat about it so far. Was a shock and then some!!

Hugely lucky, rare and quite freakish to have it discovered this way.

So that's been my year so far. How you doin?

A friend of mine participates in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride every year, here in New Zealand.

Over the last ten years, Steve has raised almost $44k. The event is on again, and you can help by donating here on Steve's page.

This ride is part of a worldwide movement to raise awareness of men's health, with a focus on prostate cancer and mental health. You can read more about how the funding is their 2025 report.

I hope at all goes well for a swift and permanent recovery.  If it helps, I've been living with one kidney for close to a decade now.  No ill effects to date.  I hated the scarring for a while, but I got used to it.  And there are rash shirts for the beach.

This short story is oh so relevant. Many of us know people who tragically put off getting something small and niggling checked out by their GP.
