ohh new Swirl badge for scanning 14 days in a row.

Bah!

I'm all for gamifying the app, it might make some people use it more often. Make the app award you with badges for doing different things: streaks (eg scan in every day for a week / month / year), 10 different scans in one day, scan in at 10 different restaurants / bars / shops / etc (different badge for each business type), local and national league tables, compare your scanning with your friends, weekly and monthly competitions, etc.

faux grumbles aside, I too support this idea, especially if it were paired with real world incentives - a free coffee for a 14-day streak, for example. An opportunity for local retailers to earn "we care" PR points by sponsoring small incentives of that sort, too.

Surely people will just scan whatever codes they come across, even if they dont go in-store just to get the rewards.

Contact tracer: "oh you didn't go into the $2 shop, you just walked past it and scanned to get the badge?? And you didn't go into these other 39 stores either?"

Yep, given speed and accuracy are highly prized in the process, we need to be careful not to impact them, hence the QR codes having a GLN and having the decentralised notification process.

What many people have missed is that we can issue a notification based on a location of interest regardless of whether the case scanned in, as long as we can match a location and time to a poster.

Also the behavioural evidence we have says that using extrinsic rewards reduces the effectiveness of intrinsic rewards. Same goes for lotteries and the like, so it gets tricky in terms of motivation.

Please don't turn this essential app into a click-bait game.

Is adding a manual entry working OK for others on iOS? Tried several times this morning, and having entered the location, and starting to enter the time, the app just goes to a blank white screen with the yellow header. No entry gets recorded.

We found this bug earlier this week, working on a fix.

I have just found this thread.  I changed phones and used Google to install all the apps on my new phone, which included the NZ Covid Tracer app.  My diary now shows entries going back to 30 March, but every time I scan a QR code I get nagged to 'complete your diary' because I have X over the last 14 days have recorded entries, where X is always less than 14.  I do not scan QR codes daily so X will always be less than 14.

I could guess that when the app is installed, for the first 14 days (from install date) this nag would be appropriate.  After 14 days though, regardless of how many scans were done, the nag should disappear surely?

I like the nag personally. Keeps me motivated to scan in to keep my 14-day streak. And also reminds me if I've been slacking off if it ever goes under 14.

Most weeks there are several days when I don't go anywhere that needs scanning.  There's zero point filling in a manual entry for "Stayed at home today" just to get some sort of completion badge.

they are trying to get you to do a manual entry for staying at home so you have an entry for everything you do

Making manual entries for staying at home is senseless.

If it must, the app should say, "we notice you didnt scan anything on day x, did you stay at home?" You click yes and it goes away, or you click no and make manual entries for where you were.

IMO getting nagged for not filling in an entry when you went nowhere (particularly as manual entry is currently broken) does not encourage me to use the app. Please don't tell me off for not recording that I didn't have a life that day!

Similarly, I don't want my mobile data to be used to repeatedly download statistics about what everyone else is doing. Please just make the app as quick, simple and reliable as possible, not fill it full of gimmicks that detract from the core purpose of recording accurate and complete data to assist with rapid contact tracing.

Did everyone miss the part where noone was using it and only 10% did over the holidays, or AFTER a confirmed case.

It's a lose lose. People don't use it, add something to encourage it and people don't like it.

I almost never stay at home for a whole day, but I sometimes have days when I only go out for a run or to walk the dog. I could enter manual entries for that, but it seems like a hassle that doesn't add any value for contact tracing purposes. So, I tend to just ignore the nag screen.
