Believe the vent is an out valve

Essentially no protection other than in. But that then relies on the other party having a better one.

I agree with you, and I didn't want to get it for that reason (if he's sick he could be spreading his germs around), but we drove to multiple stores across auckland trying to find some good N95/P2 masks and found nothing so decided we had to get him something despite it not being ideal.

Theres been a few links posted in this thread but they seem to be sold out.  Hopefully if somebody finds something they will post the link here for all of us.

A couple of options for P2 masks here (duckbill 50-pack) and here (20 pack dust mask style). No experience with this site, just stumbled across it tonight when looking for something else.

Interesting find, 'Help-IT' brand is made in New Zealand.

Its a brand name of QSI Safety based in Whanganui.
On street view you can see the warehouse of orange road cones.

My issue is KN95 masks are too small and a lot of N95 masks also won't fit around my head.

I don't want additions or modifications, I simply want a mask I can use when needed.

What about the P2 masks I linked to above?

Yep, they were available when I posted that, but as I covered in a later post (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=161&topicid=273078&page_no=8#2853943 they'd put a halt on sales, which isn't too surprising given their prices are very cheap at $1 a mask.

I got 50 P2 masks (the duckbill ones in a link a few posts above) from NXP for about $76 including delivery, but that was literally the last pack. Sure hope some more supply comes online soon, given I bet most of the population haven't got any...

I tend to use those when I'm working in the garden with compost etc. They're relatively comfortable for about an hour, but really don't stand up to longer periods of use.

There's been a lot of talk about masks, but you really need to try each one to get an idea what fits your face/works for you.

How many people would be interested in a sampler pack, of two (or three) of each of the most recommended mask types?

I've used them several times over the years. Generally decent prices, fast delivery & minimal fuss.

@duckDecoy: Just to let you know I rang NXP today as my email confirmation showed the masks as on “back order”, whereas the website is still showing as “in stock”. As I feared, they have indeed sold out with stock not due until 20 Feb, so delivery will be about a month away. They’re happy to cancel orders if that’s too long a wait; unsure if this applies to your (or others) order, but thought I’d pass this on.

Another source of KN95 masks at a good price is Crackerjack - $25 for 20, including free in-store pick-up (few stores have them in stock): https://www.crackerjack.co.nz/kn95-face-masks-20pk-cvd19kn

One warning I just stumbled upon. The QSi Help-it FFP2 ‘Duckbill’ N95/P2 masks available from several suppliers protect the wearer but not others. There has been a recall of these masks in certain cases : https://www.nzpfu.org.nz/news/covid-19-update-only-use-3m-aura-masks/National-Notice-Masks-V3.pdf
