Looking to upgrade (and into the 21st Century).

I have looked at some smart scales online, but would like a kiwi opinion.

1) There are only 2 of us.

2) Primarily, we want to track our weight daily.

3) We only have Windows 10, Apple OSX and Android devices.

I have noticed Withings and Fitbit, but cannot make a preference.

Fitbit Aria seems an old device, but scales only have to do one thing well.

Can't help with the Kiwi opinion but this guy (https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/11/winter-sports-recommendations.html) is my go to for everything. He comments on scales near the bottom of the page.

I've been looking into smart scales for the last few days. Like you, I was looking at Withings and Fitbit scales. From memory the Withings were $145 NZD from Amazon + another $30 for Youshop. Fitbit Aria scales are currently $160 at JB Hi-Fi. I ended up going with a Chinese brand (Yunmai). Here's the Amazon link to the scales I bought, have a read of the reviews. I ended up purchasing mine from this seller on Aliexpress.

Aren't there Bluetooth ones that your devices can read? Or just manually enter in the number shown (sox not very geeky, but much cheaper).

I have a Fitibt Aria (Amazon, MightyApe) and very happy. The smarts is balanced between the scales (fat % calculation) and the whole ecosystem (Fitbit trackers, social, etc). Although I wouldn't mind the Withings either - I am using the Withing Activite even more than my Fitbit trackers lately.

I wonder how long it'll be before scales are a target for malware.

Edit: The Withings ecosystem is very good. I really like my Withings Activate watch and if I was going to get a scale to test my above theory it would be the Withings scale.

joker97: By smart does it separate weight into muscle fat clothes pee and poop?

Here's how you do it: getup, go to bathroom, do whatever you want to do and then hop on the scales, naked. Done.

I find it best to weigh at the same time, every time, for consistency sake.  I do this when I get up in the morning before eating or drinking anything.  I have the Fitbit Aria as well as a Surge and the integration into one app is quite nice.

Answer to question - it gives you body fat %, lean muscle %, and tracks this over time.  You can enter a target weight into the app and it will track your progress against this.  I have compared this to the scales and the gym as well as calipers, and the Aria is always very close.

I believe it's considered not ideal to weigh yourself daily, rather weekly at the same time each week, after your morning constitutional but before breakfast?

Daily measurements can be affected by many things and causes an unhealthy fixation on weight loss that is exhausting and can cause interest fatigue.

I recently bought Withings model from Amazon but it's sitting beside me unopened due to a busy holiday season.

We have fitbit trackers so the aria was the logical choice. Results from the aria closely resemble figures our the nutritionists wizz bang biometrics scale doodah so accuracy is fairly good. That said from what I have researched, the leaner you are, the less accurate body fat/bmi readings are

We weigh daily but don't worry too much about day to day flucuations, get as much data as possible and then analyse trends over a weekly or monthly basis

I have been using the Withings scales for 7 years now with daily recordings going to the app. No problems at all and battery life for the scales is great - I think (a guess) at least a year perhaps more. They cope with several people regularly using them assigning the weight record to the right person automatically after the first weight being assigned.

Spot on - including the potential negative impact from fixation on weight loss from over-monitoring.

Decided to get the Fitbit Aria from JB HiFi. Yes, I know the technology is relatively old.

Reason: Pre-Christmas drinking and scoffing and the same again over Christmas means that I need to reduce weight. Also, I couldn't wait 20-40 days to get scales from China, no matter if they were cheaper.

I have them set up, and the weigh-in starts in earnest tomorrow (naturally, I gave them a test first).

Don't know how long I will last, but the Fitbit App. will not lie, plus my other half is on the case.

Probably, a bleak January.
