By default, Fitbit used to display people's names as their firstname followed by first letter of lastname, eg. "Eric B".

 

That was good-enough anonymity for most people, it seems, although some entered specific nicknames.

 

 

A few days ago, the Fitbit user groups suddenly starting displaying most people's full names, eg. "Eric The Half A Bee".

 

 

Not everyone in the U.S. is happy about that:

and it may be a problem for the NZ Privacy Commissioner too?

Fortunately I never gave them my real name in the first place - my general rule is to only give details to companies that actually need them. Seems like that was a good policy :)
