My mother is after a new set of frames for her glasses. The usual stores around here (OPSM etc) wont sell her new frames, only whole new glasses sets. Anyone know of a company that would be willing to do just frames? Doesnt have to be NZ based if its cheap :)

To be honest, I would have thought the chances of getting frames that exactly match the existing lenses would be fairly slim. Lenses are usually made to the exact fitting of a certain frame (and that includes adjustments for the width of the bridge and also the distance from the pupil to the lens).

I think it would be high risk too.

If you have a recent prescription then importing new frames and lenses maybe the safest lower cost option

Not bought from them but was tempted. If you have a recent prescription then you may find it easier to buy a complete set - as said above the chance of you finding a frame that fits is very unlikely. The lenses come in set sizes and are shaped to fit the frame which takes an expert.

If the glasses you have are branded, search for the brand on the site - you never know. You could buy from AliExpress; very cheap but buyer beware...

If you are looking for something other than single vision lenses, go to an optician. If they don't get the pupil distance and height exactly right then she may damage her sight or at minimum cause headaches and other minor issues.

Do you have an up-to-date prescription? If not, you should - an eye exam checks more than the eyes and can be a first sign of other medical issues like blood pressure.

Procrastination eventually pays off.

You can't fit existing lenses into new frames. OPSM include basic lenses for sod all money, then charge $120 or so for a better quality lens with appropriate coatings. Just accept the basic lens.

I've tried a few of the online glasses sellers. 39 dollar glasses wasn't too bad, but not great. Clearly Contacts was ok. Eye Buy Direct couldn't make a decent pair of glasses if their lives depended on it - they couldn't get everything right in any single pair - PD, lens alignment, etc. I tried another one that was below average as well. These all used the exact same prescription as my local optometrist, but the local ones did a MASSIVELY better job.

Ok thanks people. I'll let her know. I just know the last 2 sets shes got have had major issues with them resulting in them having to be redone a few times over and she didnt want to go down that route again. I think all shes complaining about atm is the coating wearing off the bottom of the existing ones. Might take a look for her and see if I can just tidy them up :)

If my optometrist provides glasses or lenses that don't work he will keep replacing them no charge until they do work. They had three goes once to get it right. Online providers are pretty with replacements or refunds too.

I took a look for her and it looks like the paint on the bottom rim is peeling off. I'll prob strip them down this weekend and sand off the extra paint and see how that goes for her!
