My wife has arthritis in her joints, arms and hips mostly. She's taking meds to keep it at bay, but would like some non-medical help where possible.

A work mate has suggested a Shakti Mat and swears by it, he's a power lifter by hobby and uses it religiously.

Honestly I've googled it and not sure if their PR team are amazingly good at their jobs but I struggled to find any really bad reliable feedback about them.

Do any Geekzone members use them, and if so may I ask your opinion?

Thanks guys and gals.

Hey there

My manager recommended these mats to me earlier in the year - more as a way of assisting with de-stressing and relaxing, as I get really sore arms/shoulders from a combination of computer usage and work stress. I too was somewhat sceptical but was willing to give it a go.

I try to use it most nights before bed - just for 10 minutes - and must say it's fairly effective - certainly not a total panacea, but it helps. It's also surprisingly relaxing - there are very few times where I don't start to fall asleep within that 10 minutes, despite listening to podcasts! I find it more effective to use on a bed rather than on the ground, but YMMV. It certainly is fairly painful when first using it, and it's certainly best to keep movement to a minimum (eg, reaching for something).

One thing I'd say is it's simply not worth spending a relatively large amount for the 'original' brand of mat - I bought mine off TradeMe for about $25 including shipping, and if I'd been patient I'm sure I'd have got it cheaper from their likely source (eg eBay). While I'm sure the quality's not as good, it totally does the job; mine also came with a 'cushion' for the head, which I'm not so keen on but my wife likes.

Given the cost of these cheaper versions, there's really not much at stake trying it out; if it doesn't work for your wife, you've only lost $25 and you've still got a torture device you can use on your kids/grandkids.

I'm still in the "early stages" of using one, and by that i mean I'm still getting used to the sensation.

Have borrowed one for a while to see if i want to commit, and i am reasonably positive that i will, its getting comfier by the day and improving my lower back pain already.

When I hear the name "Shakti" - I think of:

At least the stuff that comes out of the rear end of a pony might make roses smell nice.

Family member has a few of these... She also swears by them.

I still don't quite get it Although the lumpy one is just right for sqeezing a crack out of the lower back....

Can't say i've given it a good test run considering the whole puncture part to them sometimes.

if i had known about them years ago, it may have been a good option over alternative methods at the time..

I have one and use it most nights before bed for about 25-30 minutes. I drape it on top of the bed and lie on it until I'm done.

It does take a little while to get used to, your wife might only be able to tolerate as little as 30 seconds to begin with (everyone is different), but stick with it and I'm sure it will help. I get back pain when I don't watch my posture while sitting at a desk which can then lead to headaches which pills don't completely eliminate. Lying on the mat gets rid of them and makes my back feel good again, and once you're used to it it feels relaxing and soothing.

I too was sceptical before getting one but gave it a shot and am happy I did. I think they offer a money back guarantee too.
