Has anybody tried shockwave therapy for tennis elbows? Did it work for you? Apparently ACC don't cover the cost of this (I think they said it doesn't work), but providers offering them say they do.

No they are different. Tens machine uses tiny electric shocks, whereas shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves.

Like this provider?

https://www.sportsmed.net.nz/shock_wave_therapy

Note the difference in wording:

WHAT CONDITIONS DOES IT WORK FOR?

ESWT has been used in sports medicine clinics worldwide for a number of years. It is not a new treatment. There is scientific evidence to show that:

  • It is as effective as 3 months of eccentric strengthening for Achilles tendinopathy
  • It is an effective treatment for proximal hamstring tendinopathy in professional athletes
  • It is superior to eccentric strengthening and more 'traditional' rehabilitation techniques for insertional achilles tendinopathy
  • It is an effective treatment for plantar fascia dysfunction (fasciitis) and has been FDA approved for this condition
  • It is effective for treating trochanteric pain
  • Can be used to treat tennis and golfers elbow (tendinopathy affecting the common extensor and flexor tendons at the elbow)

That reads to me as them being cautious about making specific therapeutic claims.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17626054

Might still be worth a try - I'd be asking them to provide evidence that it works (if they have it), or to offer a free trial or discount.  If as I suspect - you'd be a guinea-pig - then perhaps they should be paying you for participating in their trial.

Yeah like that provider but not that provider doing it. PhysioAbsolute recommended it and it's about $60 a pop literally for 10 minutes of treatment. They say others have responded well to the treatment apparently. Will give it a try and see if any improvement. Just wasn't sure earlier if $60 for 10 minutes of treatment was pricey or not.

At $60 its so cheap that its worth a chance if it has no nasty side effects like that tens scam stuff does.

That's the thing. There may be some side effects according to some websites, not sure if nasty or not yet.

I'm guessing nobody around here has tried shockwave therapy so far! πŸ˜„

If it doesn’t work, they stuck needles into me.

Not acupuncture but called something else, idea was to make muscle bleed. It worked better then what massaging did. Took about 6 months to get no pain at all, had three to 4 treatments of the needles.

Got told not to let anyone inject Cortisone as it can cause problems later in life.

Sounds a bit like lingchi, but probably "dry needling".
