I have an old well ridden scott mountain bike that I want to fix up to use as a spare bike left at my brothers place. The handle grips have deteriorated to the point where you get black goo stuck on your hands.

What is the best method to remove all this?

I have new grips to replace with. What is the best spray to apply to make them stick? Heard hair spray mentioned.

Thanks

you don't need to spray to make it stick. if it is too big then it's the wrong grips and is dangerous.

The general consensus is that the spray doesn't do anything to make it stick in the long term, it mainly rovides a lubricant that will quickly evaporate,

You can also use hand sanitiser  or other V. high Alc content liquid...

Your applying instructions makes perfect sense. But how do I remove the old? Most of it should rip off but middle bits has broken down to gunk.

I would pick or scrape off the black goo, then clean the remaining sticky stuff off with De-Solv-It or isopropyl alcohol.

Make sure the next set you buy are 'lock ons'. They are held on by a collar that's loosened with an Allen key.

The proper way is to use compressed air with a fine nozzle. The grip will pretty much blow off

Compressed air to remove them... failing that, try using hairspray under the grip to get it off.

We used to use it to make grips stick 'back in the day'... with varying results.

But ultimately lock-ons are the solution, but are not for everyone (budget-wise).

Replace them with Lock On's...no question.

Using compressed air to remove the old ones may not work if the grips have turned to black goo.

hydrochloric acid?

but seriously, any scraping tool you can think of. spoon, butter knife, use your imagination. solvents will also help to some degree but it depends on how badly stuck it is, mechanical scraping might be your only choice. you could also set the thing on fire i guess but at your own risk.

Cheers for all the great responses :-) Plenty of options for me to explore when I get a free moment.
