So, my wife came back form the US this morning - Managed Isoloation is in IBIS Auckland, very professional Hotel only used for this purpose, strict exercise slots in car park

Managed Isolation in Wellington (Avatar Crew) in QT Hotel wellington, been seen hanging outside the hotel lobby, other guests staying there feeling unsafe, what a joke!

its not quite as bad as being portrayed in headlines,  it is my understanding those in regular manged isolation are not tested unless they become symptomatic, this lot have all tested negative before departing the US.

"The Ministry of Health told Stuff in a statement that the group was "tested for Covid-19 before leaving the United States and all tested negative"."

Not making any judgement on the vetting and quarantine process, but I was intrigued that a 787 Dreamliner was able to land in Wellington directly from LA. I guess that's because it was lightly loaded with only 50 passengers,  not too much freight/baggage and probably not fully fueled in LA and of course, much less upon arrival. If fully fueled and laden it might not be able to take off again but it could go via Auckland and get fully fueled there.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Landing a 787 after a long thirsty flight in Wellington is no problem,

Air NZ flown them between AKL-WLG when they need extra capacity,  but they just carry a light fuel load, They could probably get to OZ with a full Pax/Freight load, just like the 777s and A350 that Singapore Airlines ran before COVID.

In 2017 it was for football fans

"Air New Zealand will operate a flight between Auckland and Wellington on Saturday 11 November using its 302 seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft to help football fans see the All Whites take on Peru in the FIFA World Cup – Intercontinental Playoff."

The plane isn't going back to LA, its based in Auckland, so will just go back there.

The plane, fully gassed up would not be able to take off from WLG but is fine for short haul

Yes that seems reasonable. I have flown Wellington/Melbourne on Singapore's A350 that then went onto Singapore.

I just thought it was interesting to have the plane fly direct from the US to Wellington which is pretty rare.
