Hi guys,

We've been monitoring some e-bikes for quite some time now and have been wanting to buy a last season's model at a discount.

However, it doesn't seem that e-bikes are ever on special - I'm specifically looking at Giant/Trek/Kona dual-suspension e-bikes.

Rarely if ever - they are a sought-after commodity and in short supply - also wildly over-priced. Top of the line Specialized Turbo Levo is upwards of $20k.

Is this due to Covid-19? Or never on special anyway?

Part of me just feel that it's 'wrong' to buy these at RRP as a 10%-15% off could easily equate to $800-$1000 if buying a high-end ebike.

When I bought mine the bike shop told me their issue is supply. They sell everything they get so fast they wish they could get more. In a market like that you’re unlikely to see big discounts, even at the end of the model year.

I bought my specialised turbo Vado as an ex-demo and the thing has given me so much grief I’d pay the extra and get one off the rack were I to do it again.

What kind of grief? How is ex-demo different from a new unit?

Well yeah I too noticed prices of e-Bikes rarely drops - demand just completely outstrips supply...

Having said that, Electrify NZ (http://www.electrify.co.nz) do have some rather attractive prices for e-Bikes for their "house band" bikes.  Some may baulk at the so-called quality of their bikes (a sales person from another bike store told me she wouldn't touch any of those $2k+ e-Bikes, when theirs is is upward of $5k), but I have owned an Electrify Boulevard City for about 2 years now and am loving it.  I find the build quality pretty decent - no issues whatsover.  I have been lazy (and being an al-cheapo) and have only had it serviced once - only the chain needs replacing. Electrify have since updated their model range and they have the "Black" e-Bikes for about the same price now.  I bought mine with a bit of discount at about $2100, and coupled with the Q Mastercard Long Term finance offer at Electrify I get a 12 month Interest free payment option, albeit I have to pay a little bit of admin fee on top of the price of the bike.  All in, very happy owner of the e-Bike.  And if you happen to be around East Auckland, I cannot recommend the Botany / Huntington Park branch enough - Anthony and team is fantastic!

Evo cycles were goingg to offer me free 3 year service plus extras like helmet if I ordered 2 x giant evokes I think they were 3400ish each. So could get something like that I suppose. Got free helmet from pack &pedal plus service with a trek bike in February.

You could build your own.

I know an electrical engineer who built his own one, much cheaper, powerful and faster than the shop ones.

I Don't think Easter will make much difference to prices... they fly out the door as soon as they arrive....

Shops usually only discount to move stuff that won't move itself...

I saw one of the bikes I'm interested in buying had a pretty decent discount at Torpedo 7 recently - $6300 to $5000 (though I wonder if this is a reflection of this being a 2020 model, though it looks very similar to the '21 at Evo) I suggest checking sites regularly for specials, or just sign up to emails from the main retailers.

The other option is the 'partners' deals available through Evo Cycles - there's a wide range of employers that have signed up to this, so perhaps you know someone who may be able to buy on your behalf? Check out https://www.evocycles.co.nz/partners for the prices and range available via this means.

Yeah. Freight costs v supply (they aren't small boxes) and, remember seasons in northern vs southern play a role.

As a result, we don't see bikes in the year they 'are'. But usually before the rest of the world (added bonus to make others who are not factory sponsored jealous).

From memory around Sept/October is when you would normally start to see the new stock orders open up and replenish sales. We will get the 2022 models for our summer, while the 2021s are what is left on-shelf and they try to clear out before de-value.

But given the niche market for Electrics. There is probably less wiggle room to do that. They're sure a premium product

Some people have a lot of money at the moment to spend. Many also feel rich due to their house going up in value etc, and a lot saved money last year and didn't go overseas on holiday.  So cant see much in the way of specials on something as desirable as an E-Bike. Buying a new car is the same situation for good desirable models. There can be a 6 month wait for some.

Was that nelson?

Ones similar to those were on tv one night.

Can't find the exact ones, but they could be done up to look like motorcycles with leather bags and all. But e-bike
