A friend has asked me to help them purchase a treadmill for fitness and recovery from surgery (not fitness injury more sensitive stuff).

They are looking at Itread - TV shop. They like this because it looks easy to use and can slip under the bed. This person is 70-80 odd kgs, under six foot. Male semi retired. Fit.

https://tvshop.co.nz/products/itread

Is this any good? Are there better alternatives? Having used them at the gym in the past, this one looks more suited to gentle walking and might not like someone heavy footed. IMO.

If possible prefer a south island company or north island due to current conditions.

Thanks

The way it's bouncing up and down under that svelte woman on the web page says it's not very sturdy to me.  Exercise equipment isn't the sort of thing you want to skimp on given it tends to get such a beating.

I'm waiting on the phone call to get the price - the wait call now and get everything but the kitchen sing thrown in! But yes looks only suited to slow walking.

if it's just for surgery recovery, why not just rent for the period?

not a specific recommendation, but from elitefitness for example

I would endorse the above suggestion. You will get a much better product for the same or lower cost if renting and they won't need to store it once its no longer required. They will also deliver it and collect it so less hassle.

Have they considered an exercise bike over a treadmill?

Renting does sound like a good idea. The TV shop was over $2000-2500 K, but did come with a air fryer etc etc. And price got cheaper when it came to saying goodbye ;-)

Will look at elitefitness.

Nature of the surgery might make that slightly tricky. A cross trainer might be a good idea also.

In my area renting is around $30 - $40 per month fr something decent.  If it's a short term thing then that would be the best way to go.  No hassles or breakdowns to worry about.  The trouble might be finding someone with rental stock right now!  We couldn't find any so ended up spending $300 on a second hand one.  Plenty of entry level models around second hand for about that price, with weight limits around 80 - 100 kg, great for walking or light jogging. A bit of googling the make/model beforehand can reveal the good and bad models.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Do consider the location of the treadmill.

When I moved house, I had to remove a door from its hinges for it to be walked in to the spare room.
And this was not a larger one either!  No wonder the previous occupants had theirs  in the living room!

Get one with good cushioning.  Renting as suggested is a very good idea.  Mine was a rent-to-own and still going strong.

ANNNNND now they have you. Your phone number, at least, has gone to the highest data collection bidder. Expect an increase in robo calls.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Also think about surgery type.

If surgery done in public there will often be a ward physio for that surgeon who could give appropriate advice.

If private, ask surgeon if they have a physio they could refer you to for plan or advise about potential plans.

That is good advice, thanks.
