I am after a watch that will monitor my heart and steps and record it to an app so I can see it over time and in particular report my heart rate to my doctor - I want to track it resting, exercising, and sleeping.

Fitbit seems to be an option for around $200, but its got more stuff than I need really.

Is there a good cheaper option?  Must be moderately waterproof as I walk in all types of weather.

Not "cheaper" but in my opinion Withings Scanwatch and Huawei GT watches are really good options.

The Quantified Scientist does excellent reviews on the accuracy of fitness trackers and provides recommendations according to budget.

Thanks for these leads.  I ended up grabbing a Huawei Watch Fit for $200, not as many features as the GT but should be good enough for what I need.

If you have $1600 this could be an option: https://www.garmin.com/en-NZ/p/760778#specs

Garmin Epix Gen 2

I personally feel that all of the high end Garmins are overpriced by at least $250. It's a shame because, as an athlete, I would love one of these.

Picked up the Garmin Fenix 6 sapphire in November last year from Amazon for around $800

Money well spent I feel.  14 day battery, rock solid bluetooth, music, gps tracking, heart rate, maps.

Was interesting seeing the blood oxygen drop at night when I had a really bad cold.

I just splashed out on a new Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire. Had considered the Epix 2 but decided to stay with the trusty transflective display with solar for longer battery life. I had my FR945 for 2 years and in that time I covered:

  • 3,800Km in road and trail running
  • 2,200Km in cycling
  • 500km in hiking
  • 100km in stand up paddle boarding and kayaking

If I get the same out of the Fenix then it works out to ~25c per km. Not a bad investment really.

I had a Fenix 5 Plus for a couple of years and I really liked it but eventually the charging port failed. I opted not to buy another one as I felt that it was a weak point in the design to have exposed electrical contacts on a device that gets drenched in sweat, chlorine and salt water.

I wouldn't worry about it on a $500 watch, but for $1000 plus I needed to have a bit more confidence in the durability.

I recommended the Withings Scanwatch and the Huawei GT Runner because of budget. I have bought a Withings Scanwatch Horizon last December - but had to ship to a friend in Belgium and forward via DHL to New Zealand. These are only available in EU and US at the moment. Beautiful watch but a bit on the heavy side and need a phone for GPS. But it fits the look I wanted.
