I recently saw a clip from Patrick Gowers series (Paddy Gower has issues) about Luxon promising to lower the bowel screening age to 45 to match Australia (something he has not done nor shows intention of doing).

As some of you will be aware they have lowered it just two years from 60 to 58.

This got me thinking, if these kits are sent to you in the mail and you wanted to do screening at 45 (or whatever age you want), would it just be a case of buying your own screening kit?

A quick google search shows multiple options available for purchase at chemists, perhaps these are just as good (if not the same) as the ones we get sent at the age of 58?

I understand the bigger issue is getting a follow up colonoscopy to confirm a potential positive result, but for those of us with health insurance I figure this would be less of a problem?

I understand you want some input from the community. I also think this is something to ask your GP. They could look at clinical history and advise if necessary or not, and if you still want it, then perhaps recommend something.

If you have medical insurance, colonoscopy is probably covered (depending on plan).  It would need referral from your GP, which might need mentioning the right kind of symptoms.

Yeah I personally don't think I am at risk, but it was an interesting point though how Australia starts Universal screening at 45 and we lag way behind at 58. I figure if Australia deems it necessary for everyone to get checked at 45 and we are unable to do the same here for free like them, then a viable alternative would be to purchase the screening kit (they do seem cheap). Getting in for a colonoscopy with or without insurance shouldn't be an issue if you got a positive result on a purchased kit.

Personally I would consider one at 40 or 45 for the small cost of 20 or so dollars if Australia (and no doubt many other countries) deem it necessary to be checked from that age, rather than wait until the age of 58 to get a free one.

Are they going to keep this promise? A pity the opposition are not holding them account.

I imagine your GP would refer you for a colonoscopy (private or public as you choose) if you showed up with a positive FOBT. Double quick if you had any symptoms.

Your GP will take your history incl family history and then make a referral ( Public or Private )

Southern Cross ( my health insurer ) will not pay for a routine colonoscopy only if one is recommended by a Dr, apparently.

In 2022 at the age of 53 I had a colonoscopy due to a few issues and family history.

I had another one last month. I found out today that if the polyps were not removed in 2022 I most likely would have bowel cancer now and would have been on a bag.

I fully support bringing the bowel screening down to at least 50.

If you have the option for a test, please take it.

John

Both main parties agreed to lower it to Australias age level, so it was The current governments policy. But nothing has been done to bring it in yet. They have 1 more year and if they don’t it will be a broken election promise. If Australia can lower it even further since NZs election it shows how important it is. It is false economy not to due to the costs it can save by picking it up earlier. 60% of NZers don’t have health insurance and we are supposed to have a public health system which is why we pay our taxes for.

GP will test you for blood in stools first.
