Ambulances and fire engines have been given the power to stop music playing in nearby cars in Sweden so that their warning sirens can be heard.

The new alert system overrides loud music and bypasses sound-proofed car insulation so drivers will never be caught off guard by an approaching emergency vehicle. It uses the FM radio signal to jam drivers' speakers and send a voice alert that an ambulance is approaching.

Created by 23-year-old students at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the Evam System is being trialled in public and privately owned ambulances and fire engines in Stockholm, with plans to expand across the country later this year.

Heck yeah.

Even today I processed a dashcam vid of a moron that practically only pulled over once the Ambo had past despite me flashing my lights and waving my hand out the window gesturing to move over.

I've been guilty of not noticing an emergency vehicle in my rear view once before

I was following a truck with loose gravel that was dropping splatters on the road which was taking up more than the usual amount of my focus mind you.

Article claims it would also work when using Bluetooth or an Aux cable. Yet doesn't say how it would still work when the cars FM tuner is not in use. And would it work on cars that have Jap radios?

I was on a P1 under lights with my fiancé on Monday and no one would let us in! It was less about being heard or seen, just people not willing to let us cross.

I did wonder if those people thought, what if it is my partner, friend or child they are going to help?

This system would be awesome!

Yes, very clever. I wonder if this tech could be incorporated on railway level crossings. I'm sure that a lot of these accidents are the result of people failing to see the lights/hear the bells.

One assumes the Sweden trial could simply use RDS and the TA flag with a local FM transmitter in the ambulance. The same sort of thing could work here but obviously would have major limitations due to the huge number of old vehicles and jap imports that don't have RDS.

Unlike all of Europe nobody here uses TA announcements, and the only time somebody trialled it (ZM in Auckland) they pulled it due to complaints and a poorly written NZ Herald story that didn't understand RDS or the TA system and focussed on people saying their car radio was being hijacked by ZM.

OMG the Herald wrote a poor article with a lack of facts??? Was this reported to them?

I dont even have the antenna power connected in my car since the stupid stereo puts it up even when its on bluetooth or aux in. I dont really see this working here.

Licensing a system like this is difficult without new legislation here, you cant just simply add it to ambulances and interfere with existing broadcaster's services.

We did have one manufacture wanting to fit this kind of system to a helicopter, so they could fly over a certain area and interrupt peoples days or warn of a traffic crash ahead. I think it was Tsunado but a) their website seems to be lacking in content and b) they use to be pushing for the RDS type solution with dedicated receiver.

Driverless vehicles will be the way to go, they'll know the intended route of emergancy vehicles and pull over accordingly.

This might grab morons attention, maybe it'll work in Sweden, but I never see anyone here (Christchurch) pull over nice and early. It's like they don't bother until the flashing lights are too annoying reflecting off of their mirror, by which point I would have thought even deaf people would've checked their mirror once or twice. I always thought people don't know and/or care, not that they can't hear the siren or see the lights.
