Hi all. We are in the market for a new vehicle, probably between 0-3 years old. This will become our main family vehicle so we are thinking either an SUV or Station Wagon. We'd love an electric vehicle but there doesn't seem to be the options around currently. We had a look at a Kona but the boot spare is to small.

Otherwise we have test driven a 2019 VW Tiguan, 2019 Subaru Forester, and a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid. However, we are still very undecided. Can anyone suggest other vehicles that we should consider?

Kia Sportage is around that same price point. Absolutely love our AWD deisel model. Added a roof rack and roof box for added luggage space when needed for longer journeys. Can't fault it, for power, ride quality, all the techo bits, and build quality. Good prices for brand new also, including service plan.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

If you are looking at a Forrester I would also look at an Outback.

How about a 2019 Xtrail Ti ? its has bose sound & 4wd and is quite cheap when you compare it to a CX5 - class leading boot and back seat

We purchased a 2015 CX9 last year (3.6 L petrol version) as the family wagon - and it has been brilliant.

NZ new, lowish kms @ 55k, very tidy, seven seats, well spec-ed, loads of room and power (@ 203kW and 370NM) so it is effortless to drive and for a large car its handling is pretty darn good.

Got it for $32k vs new @ circa $65k - so a lot of car for the money.

One con is gas mileage - but we knew that when we purchased it.

So yeah - given you are looking at up to 3 years old - i would definitely recommend the 2nd hand path (of this or other vehicles) and let some other "sucker" wear the 50% depreciation :)

PS: And I understand the 2016 (2.5 L models) are even better.

We did like our X-Trail, but not enough to keep it longer term. Definitely lighter build quality, had some issues with fit of some panels and had to replace a seat due to issues with the mounting. Nissan were excellent at addressing problems, but annoying for a new vehicle Also just couldn't get use to the indirect feel of the CVT.

Station Wagon, hard to beat an Outback.

SUV, honestly? I'd at least go and check out a Renault Koleos. They are brilliant cars, exceptional value.

Subaru Outback or Mitsubishi Outlanders are great value and both have huge boot spaces. Outback has better off tarmac abilities but I don't know how relevant that is for you and the CVT transmission would put me off.

+1. We are currently on our second Outback and it is highly likely our next will be an Outback as well.

I bought our first Outback 4 years ago after test driving Kia Sportage, CX5, Hyundai ix35 and the Forester. When we replaced it last year, I had another drive of a CX5, but the Outback won out again.

Well built, drives like it is on rails, well-spec'ed, great fuel efficiency and huge rear cargo area.

If you were interested in an EV, have you considered the Outlander PHEV? About a 40km electric range I believe.

Aren't the Outlanders all CVT now too?

The diesel Outlander has a 6 speed conventional (torque converter) auto.

You should look at the Jaguar i-Pace, sounds like it could fit your wishlist.

Edit: Oh, sorry. You were looking for an estate. They are going out of style, aren't they? I hear Volvo is looking at stopping production of theirs..

Skoda Superb Sportline 206tsi is a nice option for performance (not quite as quick as you're after though)
