Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has set new 110km/hr speed limits for the SH1 Waikato Expressway, between Hampton Downs and Tamahere.

“This road has been selected to have its speed limit increased because of its design and safety features. This is one of the country’s best roads.

This is extending the 110 km/h limit to a stretch of road around five times its current length.

The heavy vehicle limit is 90kph. Based on the number doing 100 it seems there is no strict enforcement. It will be interesting to see how hv drivers respond.

I'm not sure about heavy vehicles specifically, but it's common enough to see people going ~120 on the BOP road.

I do wonder how many of the people that simply seem incapable of doing more than 80kmh on a normal stretch of highway cope with this.

Adding an additional 10kmh of speed to the equation will probably be terrifying for them.

That's OK (well, it's not really) if they stay left.

Hasn't been an issue on other 110km/h roads I have traveled, such as the Tauranga Eastern link.

They are so wide and nice, that most traffic seems comfortable traveling fairly quick, and traffic volumes are fairly light, so passing slower traffic isn't a big issue.

Trucks and towing vehicles are still limited to 90km/h, so speed differentials are to be expected regardless.

I will be interested to see how much difference the extra 10km/h for a sustained period makes to the car’s energy consumption.

I’m assuming the road will actually open a week before the date stated for 110km/h, with a reduced speed limit to allow the chipseal to settle. Like they did for Transmission Gully.

Pretty sure it'll open with the 110 limit.

They have covered all the speed signs on the existing expressway from Te Kauwhata to the northern interchange with the Hamilton section.

They are saying there is an opening ceremony on the 12th of July.

Might wait a couple of weeks for the seal to settle then.
