NZ Tesla order page has changed from Aug-Nov to Nov-Dec in the space of a weekend. I suggest before too much longer the delivery time will be similar to the 3 (first quarter 2023). Although M3 times may improve as people cancel their orders in favour of the MY

Some on the MY FB group are reporting timeframes for their orders have changed since ordering (same move as you mention above); I, along with some others, now have no timeframe at all. I think I just need to stop looking as there's nothing I can do about it anyway...

Quite right. Going by my experience from the beginning of this year you probably won’t hear from Tesla NZ again until they build your car and assign it a VIN. That was about the time they contacted me to see if I wanted to do a trade-in as I had ticked “no trade-in” when I ordered. A great follow up service I think, because I did indeed end up trading my Camry in to them. And they were very good to deal with compared to traditional car dealers where you are just expected to bend over and grasp your ankles.

Anyhow the next time I heard from them was a “Get ready for your car” email about a month prior to it landing in NZ. Then there was a “Please book a pickup date/time” email which included how much you owed them and when the funds had to be cleared by.

I guess the difference between then and now is when I look at the dates, my M3 was built 2 weeks after I put the order in. The whole process was 9 weeks (forecast 8-12 weeks at time of ordering) from order to driving the car out of the delivery centre in Mt Wellington. It was hard enough waiting 9 weeks, let alone 9 months. If you are lucky enough to have your car on the first boat (Aug-Sep?) then you may be contacted next month. The person who sends you the email is your “Tesla Advisor” (they don’t have salespeople) but don’t expect too much from them. Otherwise it could be months before you hear anything else.

Test drives are available from near the end of this month from what I have been told.

But a MYRWD in white with black interior and standard 19” wheels is approx $70K after rebate. The Escape PHEV I had shortlisted is approx $61K after rebate (talk about mission creep!). Do we really need 2 BEVs? My wife does still like the comfort of a petrol backup. Maybe a $400 gamble with 6 months to decide might be in order.

Obviously I'm biased...but I'd skip the PHEV and go for the EV option. I remember reading that you were taking your Model 3 on a road trip over the recent long weekend, I'm assuming that was rather uneventful when it came to range and charging? A few more of those and I'm sure your wife will lose the need for the petrol safety blanket.

Yes, it worked pretty seamlessly. Even managed to use a couple of free DC chargers. I probably could have got away with less but it was good to build up a bit of experience.
The biggest difficulty is the 3 still feels like a spaceship to her. And she is reluctant to even drive it. It may be that if a second BEV is in the mix it might need to be a bit more ‘conventional’.

Yeah I think once she drives it more it'll start to feel less alien...she may even wonder why some things weren't done this way sooner. Have her do all the weekend driving for a while 😉

I had no idea that the Model 3 and Y had so many after market accessories

The driver display and the rotating screen accessories would make this car very drivable for me.

Neither looks hard to install or just get a car stereo guy to do it.

I guess you don't know unless you're an owner. The driver display and rotating screen seem like no brainers to me, based on my 24 hour rental of a Model 3 but then I expect most Model 3 (and Y) owners get used to the big screen and don't think about how to accessorise the car.

All I'd suggest is at least try it for a few weeks before you start adding HUDs and swivel arms for the main screen. Many people realise after having the car for a while that it's fine the way it is.

I have been looking at some of the accessories referenced in Shiva’s video. I had the sound turned down but a couple of things to note. I believe he gets given a lot of these accessories to try and then review.

The Mickey Mouse Ears display and the CarPlay display both get their feed from the Autopilot display control feed. They are therefore susceptible to software updates ‘breaking’ them. So far vendors like Hansshow have been updating their software to cope, but how long will that support last? The CarPlay unit effectively takes the place of a phone and the you connect your phone to it to achieve AC or AA functionality. I don’t have an iPhone and am not particularly enamoured by Android Auto in the cars I have tried it in. The only application of AA I can say I was truly impressed by was in a $100K BMW. The other thing about the square display is it blocks some of the ventilation for the driver. IMO the ventilation in the 3 (and by association the Y) is just barely adequate as it is.

You have to be careful with some of the exterior lighting accessories as well. Replacing the front fog lights (or blanks in the case of the RWD) with combo foglights/indicators is illegal in NZ. Replacing the rear reflectors with turn indicators is, likewise, illegal in NZ.

The screen swivel does move the display further aft and down from where the original sits. Swivelling towards you may make the situation part of the display(including speed readout more difficult to view.

Some of the internal lighting wiring is different on post 2021 3/Ys.

The auto door opening system has no sensors to prevent it hitting objects. And from what I have seen elsewhere is pretty unreliable.

There are a couple of ‘enhancements’ I still may consider in the future.

The Eagle Eye tail lights are of interest to me because the OEM ones are a bit pathetic. Particularly the turn signals, which I believe is because the car is designed primarily for the N American market and orange turn signals were shoehorned into the design for other markets. The thing to be careful of is the tail lights in pre Oct 2021 cars have 3-wire connectors. Post that time have 4 wires.

Also the “Power Frunk”. There are however multiple different configurations so when ordering you have to get the correct one for your vehicle. Tesla change things like mounting points without notice. Being able to open and close the Frunk with your phone or smartwatch is a feature I would like.

Vendors like Hansshow do reduce the risk of getting the wrong item for your particular vehicle but they have no presence in NZ, and because they provide some support, you will pay more. I note watching “Tesla Tom’s Ludicrous Feed” on YouTube that there are certified Hansshow installers in Aussie. Maybe with so many 3/Ys in NZ there is a business opportunity here as well.

As I have said previously, I believe Tesla itself is missing a business opportunity by not offering certified accessory supply and installation.

Edit: I do agree with Obraik. Some of the accessories such as storage, shades, mats, emergency supplies can be bought prior but wait until you have got the car and driven it for a bit for the more expensive accessories. I was happy to take a chance on the HUD I got because it was ‘only’ $80 and could be chalked up to experience if not suitable.

Yeah, that's the approach I think I'll take; I've got the link to the HUD Dingbat bought, but I'd like to be sure I really do miss/feel I (or my wife) needs the centrally located speedo.

But, even as a non-owner, I've already watched countless videos of 'recommended' accessories, and had a list prepped prior to being able to order the car ordered from 'must have' to 'like to have' - so now I have an order in I'll start to buy these things over the next month or two:

  • Screen protector
  • Roof sunshade cover
  • Trunk and frunk mats
  • SSD
  • Tyre repair kit/inflator
  • Windscreen shade
  • Interior mats
  • Boot cargo cover (if not supplied)
  • Centre console storage
  • Jack pads
  • 2nd row organiser
  • Back seat protector
  • rear front seat protector
  • cup holder liner
  • Under seat storage
  • cargo hook
  • Glasses holder
  • wheel caps
  • frunk organiser
  • HUD

The Model Y should come with interior carpet mats as those are now standard in all cars. They are carpet mats though, so if you want all-weather mats then carry on 🙂

I watched his review of a new version of the Hansshow Apple CP/AA instrument cluster, and thought that looks a better product than the previous gen; assume it's still just as vulnerable to being neutered by Tesla updates,  though...
