Seems I was wrong above. Headline now reads "Ship 'partially refloated,' but still stuck in Suez Canal"
At least it's progress. Hopefully they can get it out of there in at the next high tide.
The stranded container ship is seen finally on the move and no longer blocking the canal
BBC News - Suez Canal: Giant ship blocking Suez Canal finally freed
breaking
A giant ship that blocked the Suez Canal for nearly a week has been finally freed, the Egyptian authorities say.
The 400m-long (1,300ft) Ever Given was wedged across the canal before salvage crews dislodged her on Monday.
It was not immediately clear when full traffic could resume in the canal. ...
Peter Berdowski, CEO of Dutch salvage company Boskalis, said the Ever Given had been refloated at 15:05 (13:05 GMT) on Monday, "thereby making free passage through the Suez Canal possible again".
The vessel was towed to a location outside the channel for further inspection. ...

...and often we remember
the digger and the boat
it could have taken 20 years
to get the thing afloat

Not at the time it wasn't.
Gold stars and chocolate fish all round for the digger crew!

May as well give them all houses considering what some are claiming the costs of it was (which I dispute). It would be a rounding error apparently :)

The aftermath of this will be fought out in global courtrooms between insurance companies for at least the next 10 years.... and it will be given as the reason for shipping insurance increases for the next few years..
Yes, and I'd put money on nobody learning the lesson "When the boats are big enough to completely block the canal, they're big enough already" and next time it'll be an 800m long ship that weighs as much as a small country.

To be honest sheet piling the sides of the Canal and then dredging the bottom a bit more would certainly be helpful, and if they did it fully they might even be able to allow convoys of smaller vessels to travel bi directionally at the same time, which would improve efficiency ( and generate higher income)
The Canal Company had income north of US$ ~5 billon in 2020 so its not short of cash...
Some locals to the canal may be disappointed, according to one article I read some were hoping that the containers were full of TV sets and iPhones.
My SO's ancestors came from one of the Shetland Islands. The story I've been told is that they'd go to church to pray for shipwrecks so they'd have some timber with which to start fires in winter, all they had for fuel was damp peat from bogs, lit with pages torn from their bibles soaked in oil they got from rendering beached puffin carcases.

My bet would be they'll hike tolls to pay for adding a second canal ASAP over the entire length, so a small-ish increase in shipping cost, but otherwise business as usual.
The less immediate effect will be even more incentive (ie than Covid has already had) for nations to consider security of supply for essential products etc. However when the pandemic is over, it'll probably be forgotten.
Well, it's too late to make jokes about this whole situation now.
That ship has sailed.

I can't fathom why you'd barge in with a stern comment like that.
