Where I mainly drive in the Wellington City and suburbs on the flat there are a lot of 30km,40km with short bits of 50km smattered In between judder bars and traffic lights every block that you need to slow down to approach. Only place I can 'speed' at 50 for a good stretch is on the crest of the hills, or driving down the hill.

Then there are the empty cycle and bus lanes that make you crawl, single file in one lane next to them. Choices have been so minimised that going more than 40 is near impossible now in Wellington.

What is it with people in new cars? Why do they drive around town at 40 ?

Too scared to go over 3000 RPM because they think its a 1980s car that has a convoluted break in procedure.

Heavy fog this morning. On the motorway I managed to spot an imbecile with NO HEADLIGHTS ON. The only reason I managed to spot him is because his big bloody ute was actually darker than the surrounding fog, like a wraith sucking in all the light. Normally you'd have your headlights on at 6:15 in the morning because the sun isn't even up yet. But no, despite all the fog it still hadn't occurred to this guy to think about his lights.

I flashed my lights at him a couple of times but of course a person who is too stupid to put their lights on in the fog before sunrise is also the sort of person who is too stupid to cotton on to why someone might flick their lights at him. He eventually put his lights on after we exited the motorway and stopped at traffic lights. I guess the hamster on the treadwheel inside his head had finally spun up by that point and allowed a meagre thought to enter into his brain meat.

As is usual on my walk for a blood test - always see either of:

- Car / Bus / Truck etc run the Red Light @ Hansons Lane / Riccarton Road

- Car parked in the Cycleway

- Car parked on the Fire Hydrant @ #91 Hansons Lane!

- Numerous cars parked in Arthur St during the No Stopping hours of 8-9am M-F

Today it was Car (Displaying L Plate) on the Hydrant!

Also 4 Vehicles parked on Arthur St @ the Hansons Corner causing chaos for the School Traffic!

Does anyone from CCC Parking Enforcement show up? Rarely even with multiple people phoning them!

Get plenty of that around here and also overtaking with no view of whats in front of them. Good to report them as they are typically well known to police.

However a couple of situations i've had is auto headlights don't always turn on in fog. Also a dimly lit dash and you can't tell if the lights are on or not.

Fog lights on 24/7 is just as bad as no lights.

Neighbour down the road has a new Nissan Navara ute with automatic headlight hi-beam dimming that actually works !

Much better than the auto system in his Audi,

I know that having a gigantic vehicle is all the rage these days due to the magical qualities they possess, but maybe you shouldn't have one if you can't manage the size? If you have to do an Austin Powers-type manoeuvre to reverse your Range Rover out of a supermarket carpark, the whole time with a look of great consternation on your face, then your vehicle is too big for you. Trade it in for a Vitz.

I'm surprised this isn't the busiest thread on GZ given the Muppets on the road around here alone!

We are a No Stopping Street 8-9 / 1430-1530 M-F School Street.

CCC say we will patrol "regularly"! Regularly is an average of ONCE per YEAR! (It does however meet the definition of "regular)

6 cars from the Corner to the School there at least since yesterday, one since Saturday!

Gold Band Taxi School Drops halfway to the School, does a U-Turn, then proceeds to queue jump several cars before forcing his way into the queue due to oncoming traffic!

10 minutes later another car attempted the same thing, but was thwarted by oncoming traffic!

Muppets are everywhere - be careful out there!

Today I saw:

Large White (Unmarked) Van try and queue jump (Quite a few in the queue)! Was forced back into the queue by oncoming traffic!

(Average several queue jumpers per week!)

One guy even got out of his car in the queue to "direct" oncoming traffic! (First time I have ever seen that while their car is in the queue!)

Despite the No Stopping etc, there are several cars still parked since the weekend! (They know there is no (Or rarely ever) enforcement!)

What is the point of restrictions if they are never (rarely) enforced? The "problems" are every day! The CCC have yet to answer that question!

We have the same problem in Wellington. I often encounter cars blocking the footpath but it takes the council hours to respond, by which time the offending vehicle is usually long gone. I emailed one of my local councillors to ask if they could do some proactive enforcement and she just ignored me.

Six months ago they changed the rules to toughen up on footpath parking, and they stated that they would initially focus on 'educating' people. Six months later there is still no enforcement!

And don't get me started on the Island Bay cycleway where half of the car parks have recently been removed, so residents are now just parking illegally knowing that there are no consequences for doing so.

I'm all for encouraging cycling but the sudden removal of parking options without providing a realistic alternative just encourages "civil disobedience". I expect a good proportion of those vehicles belong the residents. Where else can they park now?

My other hobby horse, many cycleways that share roadway with motor vehicles are potentially dangerous to cyclists and actually makes things worse for all users rather than better.

Came across this guy yesterday.

Has an extremely bright LED light bar in front of his vehicle. Viewing back from my rear view mirror this was quite intense especially given the light conditions at the time.

Realise intensity of lights can be subjective but is such a light on the front of a car legal to use on public roads amongst other traffic? I know some vehicles have spot lights etc but don't normally see them being used in general traffic.

That's what I thought too. I moved to right lane shortly afterwards. No such light on rear of car so rear number plate was clearly visible as he passed me.
