freitasm: Probably trying to hide plate from speed cameras.

I am of the understanding that speed cameras don't use light in the visible spectrum, for this very reason - so a vain attempt if that is indeed the reason.

It might blind the camera if the light bar uses incandescent (filament) bulbs, which put out a lot of IR. But the modern LED lamps put out no significant IR at all.

Possibly they added that to make up for HIDs that are on deaths door and not able to see anything. Many old cars around like that now, and who wants to spend 100s on replacement lights for a $2500 banger of a car.

Came across this guy yesterday.

Has an extremely bright LED light bar in front of his vehicle. Viewing back from my rear view mirror this was quite intense especially given the light conditions at the time.

Realise intensity of lights can be subjective but is such a light on the front of a car legal to use on public roads amongst other traffic? I know some vehicles have spot lights etc but don't normally see them being used in general traffic.

No, it's not legal. Not because of the light intensity but because he only has one DRL.

Journeyman:Heavy fog this morning. On the motorway I managed to spot an imbecile with NO HEADLIGHTS ON.

This is pretty common now days to see cars at night with zero rear illumination. I see it 2 or 3 times in a 15 minute drive on motorways at night. I think it is a combination of daylight running light illuminating the drivers view or better LED street lighting and electronic dashes being constantly back-lit. In older cars/older times the dark dash and dark road in front reminded the driver to turn their lights on.

Someone at work was saying that her husband's car has automatic headlights but hers doesn't. This results in her husband sometimes forgetting to turn the lights on when he's driving her car.

Automatic lights are the worst. Every time you get to a tunnel or  bridge or tall building shading the road or something the dash and stereo all dim down because the lights have come on.

I went through a police checkpoint with only my DRL's on.

Was picking up my son after an event so I parked up nearby waiting for him and turned my headlights off. 20 mins later got the call to say he was ready so I drove up and forgot to turn on headlights but DRL's automatically came on.

Further up the road after picking him up was the checkpoint. Although I was stopped for breath test, nothing mentioned about my headlights. It wasn't until I got another 1km up the road before I realised.

I put a small piece of black tape over the sensor of my wife's car so she can leave the lights on auto but not have this issue.

Ok - let's say you're about to enter a busy intersection at rush hour and you hear police sirens. The sirens are getting louder which means they're getting closer. Might I suggest it's unwise to enter the intersection, even if you have the green light? I understand the temptation to think "Nah I can gap it. I'll get through the intersection before the cop gets here" but the police car will be travelling quite fast and will get there before you know it. It's probably best to just wait a moment just in case the police car is actually driving on the wrong side of the road - which they're allowed to do.

Might I suggest also that if you're the second car in the queue, it is doubly unwise to follow the first car through the intersection.

Seeing a visitor to the corner and what do I see?

Said to me on his return "I'm from the Air Ambulance Service"! As if posting something at the Chinese Consulate is an excuse to be lazy!

Yellow Lines are there for a reason! (I said to him "They are not lazy selfish m*r*n parking places!)

I have done in lots of cases, but less than 10% acknowledgement since Covid, so don't bother emailing (And giving my email details) any more 😔.

Is there a gap in the painted lines? There appears to be only a token effort. Lazy painter?
