The Model Y should come with interior carpet mats as those are now standard in all cars. They are carpet mats though, so if you want all-weather mats then carry on 🙂

That's the reason! We have 11 and 14 year old boys - should I send you a photo of my wife's car's mats?! It's the same reason we put back-of-seat protectors on the front seats of our cars. Hopefully one day they'll be less filthy, or at least I guess they'll leave home...

Planning on getting these mats - more subtle than the popular all-weather mats like the 3D Maxpider ones: https://www.taptes.com/collections/model-y-floor-mats/products/taptes-rhd-tesla-model-y-floor-mats

On accessories - would welcome thoughts from M3 owners on what they think are critical/useful accessories, and good places to buy them from...

Vendors like Hansshow do reduce the risk of getting the wrong item for your particular vehicle but they have no presence in NZ, and because they provide some support, you will pay more. I note watching “Tesla Tom’s Ludicrous Feed” on YouTube that there are certified Hansshow installers in Aussie. Maybe with so many 3/Ys in NZ there is a business opportunity here as well.

I watched his review of a new version of the Hansshow Apple CP/AA instrument cluster, and thought that looks a better product than the previous gen; assume it's still just as vulnerable to being neutered by Tesla updates,  though...

@jonathan18

There are far more experienced Tesla owners here than me, but of your list I have everything except

  • Roof sunshade cover (not needed yet, will see what next summer brings)
  • frunk mat and frunk organiser (hardly ever access frunk, it is used for my emergency stores)
  • SSD (supplied USB stick is okay at the moment)
  • Boot cargo cover (not applic to M3)
  • Interior mats (I don’t have teenage sons)
  • 2nd row organiser (as above)
  • Back seat protector(as above)
  • rear front seat protector(as above)
  • cup holder liner (have sprung loaded divider instead)
  • Under seat storage (not applic to M3)
  • Glasses holder

Edit: I also got a bag to store my Aero hubcaps in, mudflaps and a Type 2 Charging Cable.

Got quite a few of the accessories from the local Tessories. I like to support someone to takes the initiative to import the stuff. Some stuff just can’t be got locally though.

The two accessories I got that are relevant today are a front windscreen shade since that makes a huge difference to how hot the car gets in the summer (and protects the dash and screen from direct sun) and a Raspberry Pi 4 with SSD to use as my storage device for Sentry/Dashcam. With the Pi, when I get home it will upload any saved footage on the drive to my home storage so it's archived out of the car. I also have a separate process that runs on my home storage that combines each camera file into a combined video and increases the playback speed through the boring bits so I can then review footage from my phone when I'm bored.

Oh, I guess I also got some mudflaps to keep the grit they put on the roads here in the winter from sandblasting my paint.

These and a display screen protector were the first things I installed.

The mudflaps are much easier to install if you have some proper trim removal tools.

Trim removal tools pretty much essential for installing the HUD.

It is a correct observation that there is a massive amount of accessories for Tesla model's, VS other EV's in the market.

I think there are a few reasons for this:

- Many enthusiast owners, that are willing to spend money to improve the car.

- Area's where tesla's (partially model 3 & Y) fall short compared to their peers. I don't see any reason to do acoustic treatment to my Lexus RX, but likely would on a model Y as Tesla falls short in that area. Another example was eialry cars lacking center console storage, leading to aftermarket solutions. Tesla has not resolved this one.

- Due to the limited number of EV models, People using tesla's for applications that peer ICE cars are unlikely to be used for. As an example a suspension lift kit (both 3 & Y). (I wouldn't expect somebody to spend money lifting the likes of a Camry, they would just simply buy a car with more ground clearance like a rav4, fortuner, prado etc).

[edit] - and of course they are fairly popular / common car's, and largely privately owned rather than in fleets.

The suspension lift kit:

https://unpluggedperformance.com/product/dirt-and-snow-coilover-suspension-kit-for-tesla-model-y/

(note that there are cheaper "spacer" kits available too, but these require LVV certification in NZ, and don't increase suspension travel for better articulation and comfort).

Entire US based company doing nothing but Tesla accessories:

eh I think the model 3 is pretty ubiquitous, very like a vw beetle or mini, a decent car on its own but also quite a canvas for modifications

Great to know about the mud flaps, as not something currently on my list. Any recommendations for composition/style/retailer?

I saw these ones on the Taptes website for $50 US, but they seem pretty much the same as these ones for half that on Ali Express (or M3 ones sold on Tessories for $43, in terms of equivalent local supply). Will this type be adequate?

These don't come with a trim removal tool - would one of these cheap as kits from Ali Express do the job?

Thanks for the help...

Related to my more generic post on long-distance travel in an EV, I'm keen on nailing down any gotchas in relation to cables, both for at-home charging, but also when travelling in a Tesla.

At this point, I've no intention to install a dedicated charger as we have a caravan socket, so charging via this or even 3-pin should be fine most of the time; if I need more juice than these can provide I'll use a commercial charger.

I'd appreciate any feedback on what I've noted below:

Home charging

 - 3-pin charging: cable supplied

 - caravan connector: would need to buy an adapter such as this (So definitely not supplied? I've read mixed things). Understand this will allow me to charge at home at 16A (as we do with the Leaf) - is this correct?

Fast DC chargers

- no need for a cable; uses Type 2/CCS without an adapter (so no need for an adapter for some fast chargers?)

Commercial AC chargers

 - fixed cable: will be able to use those with a Type 2 connector (again, any adapter needed?)

 - BYO cable: would having a Type 2>Type 2 cable be useful/necessary?

Thanks for any clarifications and corrections...
