from the BBC News website - the Ever Given limerick:

En route from the Red to the Med
A vessel conspired to embed
Its bow in the mud
With a bloody great thud
So we're off via Cape Town instead

A ship got stuck go figure
In some muck the rigger
Said we’ll never jig her
We need to get a digger

The rigger got a digger
A teensy weensy digger
We need a bigger digger
Said the digger rigger

I think I can I think I can
the little digger stood
I’m not just a digger
I’m the one that could

That was a trigger for the digger
Acting with some vigour
and a tug and with some luck
it dug the ship out of the muck

Fred99:

My SO's ancestors came from one of the Shetland Islands.  The story I've been told is that they'd go to church to pray for shipwrecks so they'd have some timber with which to start fires in winter, all they had for fuel was damp peat from bogs, lit with pages torn from their bibles soaked in oil they got from rendering beached puffin carcases.

... uphill both ways... work twenty nine hours a day down Mill... live in a brown paper bag in a septic tank...

They recently finished double-laning (actually 2 separate channels) a 35KM stretch. It cost US$5bn and doubled the two-way navigable section. There's another 120KM that's still single lane. Once a day, a convoy starts from each end and passes in the double-lane section in the middle. The longer double-lane section increased the capacity by allowing longer convoys.

Aljazeera: Suez crisis creates winners and losers in the global supply chain

... hiccups in global supply chains have historically tended to raise freight rates and shipowners’ profits....

...The Greek ship-owning community, which controls more than a fifth of the world’s ocean-going merchant fleet and more than half of the EU fleet by weight, according to the United Nations, is poised for a potential bonanza in rates.

Time charters, which guarantee the owner a day rate, have the additional advantage of shifting the risk of delays to charterers. The alternative, voyage charters, in which charterers pay for a specific route regardless of its duration, tend to leave the owners exposed.

“I don’t expect many owners to be suffering. Most charters these days are time charters. Simply speaking, If a ship is delayed as a result of the vessel stuck in the Suez, the owner of the delayed vessel still gets paid by the charterer,” .

At least they had puffin carcasses. Only thing we could afford was a cup of cold poison.

Surprisingly tricky, and I've failed a few times but getting further each time.

That's how they do it in the real world too isn't it?

Fred99: My bet would be they'll hike tolls to pay for adding a second canal ASAP over the entire length, so a small-ish increase in shipping cost, but otherwise business as usual.

It's the first incident like this in 160 years - I don't think they'll be over-reacting like that. They are just a shortcut - not the only option, so they can't charge whatever they want - they have to be cheaper than going the long way.

wellygary: To be honest sheet piling the sides of the Canal and then dredging the bottom a bit more would certainly be helpful,  and if they did it fully they might even be able to allow convoys of smaller vessels to travel bi directionally at the same time, which would improve efficiency ( and generate higher income)

The Canal Company had income north of US$ ~5 billon in 2020 so its not short of cash...

If they can handle the current demand, then increasing capacity won't pay off and will be a waste of money.
