I have to smile at the use of ‘selective facts’ when it comes to discussing the feebate scheme. This morning a commentator was talking about collecting “a quarter of a billion dollars from high emission vehicles that can’t possibly be spent on the small number of EVs sold in NZ.” Conveniently forgetting about the PHEV and HEV (from next year) that also qualify for a slice of the quarter billion.

I have been taking a note of the new price of various low emission vehicles and will be interested to see how much the RRP increases when rebate is widely available. Hopefully the government has a bureaucrat monitoring it to call them out. As reported it already has for used imports.

Its a system that can easily be adjusted and will be over time.

People should and will choose  options that are below the 195g level and more likely to choose cars with subsidies. Its just how people shop.

We'll also get offered more lower emission vehicles, esp for things like utes where we dont get EURO6 compliant cars yet etc.

195g is a pretty lax starting point

If you watch someone who is pro feebate you will get the most accurate facts. If you watch someone who is anti the feebate you will get the most accurate facts

Thats pretty much how news works these days. Forcing opinions, lobbying. Works on all subjects too. We need to filter out the noise

Thank you!

  • Overall, June 2021 registrations of 15,135 vehicles were up 6,822 units (82.0%) on the same month in 2020.
  • There were 342 pure electric vehicles, 52 PHEV’s and 1,113 hybrid vehicles sold for the month

  • and thus 13628 ICE

Meaningless for now, but lets see how each month goes. Hybrids are well up as expected as cost efficient. I'm not a big live TV watcher but I wish there were ads galore for EV, PHEV and hybrids. GZ is an exclusive audience, the one that matters is the general public who I see as ambivalent. Electric is novel, just as I compare my 199cc  lawnmower to an electric one. Marketing is needed. Maybe the incoming supply is too low and/or quickly sold to bother?

What were people saying about prices going up? Tesla has just reduced the price of the Model 3 once again. The Long Range is now very close to qualifying.

That's reaching parity (or better) with equivalent ICEs, and giving other EV makes a prod on their pricing. https://www.aa.co.nz/cars/buying-a-car/car-buying-guide/new-cars/new-car-prices/

The audi/bmw/merc equivalents are about $74k, we've long passed price parity and you have #3-5k fuel savings a year etc

The cheapest BMW 3 series (135kW) has a list price (typically before ORC) of $76,100. The Tesla SR+ is 211kW, so is substantially faster...

At this point buying a lower end new BMW 3 series doesn't seem like a rational decision unless some other aspect (want to match brand of other car in garage?) is a key buying criteria. I still see the appeal of the likes of the BMW M3 though.

The M3 is $169,000 base price vs $95,900 now, it takes 98 fuel too at about $140-150 a tank...

Plus will get a hefty extra fee next year at 220g/km co2
