There is one of those VWs that parks up at the end of the road here at work and the guy loves just starting and revving it for the other guys that they work with doing construction.

Handsomedan:

Hard to tell at the speeds they're going, but I'd say at least some of them are driving either GTi's or GTX's as they have turbos (hence the blow-of valves making the psshhhh noise)

Oh you don't need a turbo to get that sound ;)

Are they driving GTIs or do they just wish they had GTIs so they pimp their car out?

A stock standard GTI won't be super loud or have a blow-off valve. They're not usually showy cars so it sounds like this guy has riced his up a bit. Sad really.

I have noticed an increasing number of very noisy vehicles driving past my house. Some of them are motorbikes. Anyone else noticed this. I am guessing they are modified exhausts to make as much noisy as possible . It doesn't seem that noise limits are being enforced or being checked at WOFs. I don't know if the cops will flag down noisy vehicles or not. It does appear there are rules when getting a WOF as below , but these aren't much good if not enforced or people are driving vehicles without a WOF.

Like any laws, they only apply to the lawful.

The noise test in a standard WOF is subjective only.  If the muffler system appears factory standard, or is 'typical' for the make, model and type of vehicle then the inspector won't bat an eyelid.  They can require a objective noise test but rarely do.  The other issue is that those with noisy systems, can go to the trouble of fitting the normal muffler for the test, then change back to the noisy one after.  Police are rarely interested as they focus on safety issues, and lets face it, traffic enforcement is a shadow of it's former self.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

My highlighting

This.

In the 'olden days', I used to work for one of the big four Japanese motorcycle importers.
I distinctly remember our Technical Manager complaining that if we imported a motorbike "half as noisy as a Harley, we'd never get it accepted for registration"

How many Harleys left the showroom with the original mufflers? I remember Japanese sport bikes being sold with free aftermarket exhausts for "track days". Few bikes stayed as quiet as they were originally.

Locally at Foxton Beach most of the noisy bikes aren't even road legal. They are MX bikes trailered into the area.

The sheer amount of SUV owners who clearly do not need an SUV at all, happily taking up space in your lane as they come downhill or alternatively jamming up the hillside roadways in Wellington. It's insane, feels like it's increased 10 fold in the past decade.

How do you determine they don't need a SUV

They have read that they are more likely to survive if they are involved in a crash

Most have not worked out that the "close calls" they have had is in fact due to their garbage driving

So now we have bad drivers armed with vehicles that are more likely to kill the innocent person.

Years ago I heard the obvious solution. Make a new class of licence for these "off road" vehicles , make Mum drive a 4 wheel drive course, mud, steep slope, river crossing, etc and within 2-3 seconds she will decide the small around town car will suffice to drop the kids off to school in.

Give them a proper off road SUV driving test if you want to own one.

99% will go back to choosing something much smaller.

Did the course.  So much fun. :-)

SUV does not equal off road 4x4

I see very few proper ladder frame SUVs on the roads. Most so-called SUVs are similar to my CX-5, which is barely any bigger than a Mazda3.
