How do you determine they don't need a SUV

Give them a proper off road SUV driving test if you want to own one.

99% will go back to choosing something much smaller.

Notwithstanding that I have actually done and passed an NZQA approved 4x4 course for other reasons, my main reason for owning the 4x4 is that it has a 3500kg tow rating for hauling the rally car and service kit to various events around the country.  About the furtherest my 4x4 goes off road is the service pit paddocks at events.

So on that basis, would it be "determined" that I do not need a 4x4?  Or would people like to keep their noses applied to their own business and stop making assumptions about why someone is driving a particular vehicle?

SUV does not equal off road 4x4

Shhhh, they will not know this, and they will go back to owning a vehicle better suited to their actual needs.

I drive an SUV. I could easily have a small hatchback, but my company did not give me that choice. I enjoy driving an SUV.

I don't care if others don't like it. It suits me and my lifestyle and is super handy. Plus being a Hybrid it's economical (although I don't pay for gas either, so again - moot point)

You have a clear, thought out need.

Mum dropping kids off to school in one because they are scared of dying in a car crash is not a valid reason.

So many are below average in driving skills , park illegally, have no idea where they are on the road, etc etc etc that they become a significant hazard for other people.

So many also have the "might is right" attitude.

The sheer amount of SUV owners who clearly do not need an SUV at all, happily taking up space in your lane as they come downhill or alternatively jamming up the hillside roadways in Wellington. It's insane, feels like it's increased 10 fold in the past decade.

Don't forget how it's next to impossible to back out of an angle parking space when you have one of these behemoths next to you, blocking your visibility.

You go and talk to some of these mothers and you find the SUV is the husbands idea...probably a pen!s issue...

My sisters X wanted a "mans vehicle", she had to good sense to tell him to sod off...permanently for that and other reasons

A sport utility vehicle (SUV) is a car classification that combines elements of road-going passenger cars with features from off-road vehicles, such as raised ground clearance and four-wheel drive.

There is no commonly agreed-upon definition of an SUV and usage of the term varies between countries. Thus, it is "a loose term that traditionally covers a broad range of vehicles with four-wheel drive

If they are crossing over the line needlessly then just drive on your side and stop if you get too close to them and make them back up if needed.

We have a SUV, we don't go off road. It is the easiest vehicle for me to get in and out of. It is the easiest vehicle for my wife to get the wheel chair in and out of. It has sod all  to with penis size. Making generalisations full of  peril.

Also many SUVs are smaller than cars e.g Suzuki Ignis, Suzuki Vitara, Toyota Yaris etc etc

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Yes, I know I have a particular need for certain aspects of the vehicle on occasion.  But if I'm commuting to an office job on the motorway one morning in it, how will you know my vehicular needs?

"Mum" could be dropping the kids off to school in it because I have the "smaller car" for the day as it needs WOF/servicing etc.

In some cases, an SUV is actually highly practical for those with a certain number of kids because the SUV has more seating than a small car and more easily accessible to get the kids in and out of their car seats.

Driving skills are not related to vehicle size or type and if you look more carefully, you can identify the same deficiencies in any/all vehicle types.  It's about as much point as saying that if you drive a red car you have below average driving skills.  If you want to make such statements, provide actual evidence rather than blinkered anecdotes.

"Might is right" is purely down to arrogant attitudes on the road, and again, the size of the vehicle makes zero difference to this.  I've seen it in all sizes of vehicle.  Though it is amusing when the small cars try and "push" me along with their impatience.  They just disappear behind my tailgate where I cannot see them at all.

I know it's all the rage to bash SUV/Ute drivers for perceived grievances, but realistically, focus on something that has more benefit across the board.  Driving standards in NZ are appalling on a good day.  Fix those before you worry about what type of vehicle someone is driving and whether it fits your world view.

the thing is you are in the minority of people who need one

75% of people don't need them and a sedan would suffice

Compare the length of a Mazda 6 sedan versus a CX-5. You might be surprised as to which one is actually a lot bigger.

We have a Vitara for the same reasons.

But I am assuming the OP was meaning the larger ones eg Ford Ranger, Toyota Sequoia , Kia Sorento,  Land cruiser, etc.
