So? Why should that mean that they cant have nice things?

no it doesnt, just means you need to use it properly.

That'll definitely change if they have a different style of vehicle.

Ex Wellingtonian here. Mid to large SUV's to utility trucks parking on Roseneath roads, wow what a nightmare for normal traffic let alone emergency vehicles. Even when my dad had a Hillman Imp back in the late 60's it was bad enough to park safely on those roads when we went a calling on my Gran.

When we lived in Sydney inner suburbs where some of narrow suburban streets are so narrow that even parking with two wheels on the very narrow footpath was a pedestrian and traffic hazard and in one suburb, St Peters where we bought, the fire service had to shunt vehicles that had not parked with two wheels on the footpath. Huge hue & cry over that. But what could the council do as no properties are big enough for driveways let alone garages and there is no off street parking. Even the 'Night Cart' lanes behind each row of multi-terrace and federation cottages are barely wide enough for a mini. Our best mates parents, who lived in Erskineville inner Sydney, bought a twin terrace just after the war and gutted one and used it as a garage at the front and a joined across enlarged kitchen dinning room at back. Made a seven figure fortune when the mother sold up in 2015.

So Wellington has nothing on Sydney when it comes to narrow streets. You block an emergency service, especially fire and they will move with it force.

As MikeB4 stated - in our case the Kia Sportage, we just slide in and out off and my knees love it.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

A lot of pictures on facebook of people with cars stuck where they clearly should not have taken them. Perhaps if they had these evil SUVs they would all be fine and home now without drama?

Maybe it would just be easier to say that people shouldn't drive cars that are bigger than they can handle?

I'm not saying anyone should determine what people can handle. I'm not proposing legislation via a forum post. What I'm saying is that people should have some common sense (I know) and not drive a vehicle bigger than they can manoeuvre.

The legislation already exists. It is determined by NZTA and assessed by testing authorities.

Got a class 1? Car no more than 6,000kg.
Class 2? Under 18,000kg
Etc etc (with some caveats and exceptions)

Are you suggesting that we should break class 1 into further weight classes/limits?

We have a SUV, we don't go off road. It is the easiest vehicle for me to get in and out of. It is the easiest vehicle for my wife to get the wheel chair in and out of. It has sod all  to with penis size. Making generalisations full of  peril.

Also many SUVs are smaller than cars e.g Suzuki Ignis, Suzuki Vitara, Toyota Yaris etc etc

the thing is you are in the minority of people who need one

75% of people don't need them and a sedan would suffice

Walk into your local Mitsubishi dealer, and see if you can buy a traditional Sedan/Wagon the same size as an Outlander. You'll not find one.

The same goes for a lot of the other 'mainstream' brands, with a couple of exceptions off the top of my head being Mazda and Toyota.

Holden and Ford did once have the viable alternative to a SUV with the Commodores and Falcons respectively, however both of those went the way of the dodo with the rise in popularity of the SUV.

Consumers have brought SUVs and Utes in large numbers, so that is what the manufacturers have provided at the expense of the sedan/wagon

no but the little woman who can hardly see over the wheel of a big SVU trying to park it at a supermarket should probably be in something smaller because it doesnt get easier out on the road.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Maybe the little woman is a equestrian, and needs the SUV to move her dog-meat-and-glue from place to place? Should she own two cars, least she be judged on appearances by those who have no idea why she has an SUV?

Until the law states that we can't make our own choice of what to drive and where we can take it, I don't think we should be making wild judgements over who has the right to drive what and where.

Me..hell yes.

We should have a class 1A, it is unmodified from factory specs (including the stereo ) and has limited power to weight ratio.

You have a Class 1A licence for 2 years after you get a full licence (work vehicles excepted)

You can not own a vehicle you are not licensed for (work vehicle excepted)

You can not get finance for a vehicle you are not licensed for (work vehicles excepted)

If you get caught speeding/dangerous driving, etc etc etc then you licence gets reduced to a 1A licence no matter what you had before for 2 years

2nd time it becomes permanent.

If a person is caught driving a vehicle they are unlicensed for the insurance company will be informed

If you sell a vehicle out of spec for a class 1A there is a $2000 fine

If a vehicle is caught modified out of class a note is made against it, 3rd time it gets crushed.

Basically its to take the boy racers out of the market.

Oh, and if you get a 2nd fine , the vehicle gets impounded until ALL fines are cleared, and if not cleared within 3 months the vehicle gets crushed.
