Ge0rge: The legislation already exists. It is determined by NZTA and assessed by testing authorities.

Got a class 1? Car no more than 6,000kg.
Class 2? Under 18,000kg
Etc etc (with some caveats and exceptions)

Are you suggesting that we should break class 1 into further weight classes/limits?

You're missing the point (perhaps deliberately) and you seem to have missed a few sentences from my post. I'm not suggest legislation changes. I'm not suggesting changes to licence endorsements. I'm suggesting common sense.

I'm not talking about licences for heavy vehicles. We're talking about SUVs here - I think that should be fairly obvious. My issue is people driving large vehicles poorly. I think those same people would do a better job of vehicle handling if they had smaller vehicles.

Me..hell yes.

We should have a class 1A, it is unmodified from factory specs (including the stereo ) and has limited power to weight ratio.

You have a Class 1A licence for 2 years after you get a full licence (work vehicles excepted)

You can not own a vehicle you are not licensed for (work vehicle excepted)

You can not get finance for a vehicle you are not licensed for (work vehicles excepted)

That wouldn't work

When Nigel wants a "proper car", Daddy will quickly set up a company that will employ Nigel (at a salary that provides Daddy with the best income-splitting tax advantage, of course) and buy Nigel a shiny new vroom vroom machine as his 'work car'.
Oh how they will both laugh at the stupid rules the peasants have to follow.

It's not the vehicle size that is relevant.  Those people who drive large vehicles poorly are more than likely to just drive poorly no matter what they are driving.  The problem is not the vehicle, but the severe lack of actual driving skills and ability in this country.  One basic test that you are taught to pass at age 16-18 and that's it for life.  No actual skill training or education on vehicle dynamics, skid control, how to get out of whatever mess you just got yourself into, and how not to get yourself into that mess in the first place.  Nothing like that is offered in NZ at an effective level unless you participate in regular motorsport and learn, often the hard way.

Again, stop picking on a certain type of vehicle just because it annoys *you* when you have no idea the reason they are driving it and are just making spot judgements.  It's no different to picking on drivers based on ethnicity or gender.

Back to Muppets on the Road

The wild weather sin Auckland certainly brought them out in force!

The number of idiots that thought it'd be a good idea to ford a flooding road was mind-blowing.

I watched/filmed a guy in our street stop, back up and then rev the hell out of his car to take a damn good runup at the flood waters, because (as we all know) the faster you drive through a flood, the better.

Absolute morons.

Sunnynook (AKL's North Shore) was like a post-apocalyptic scene on Saturday morning - we went to help friends who were heavily affected by the flooding and there were abandoned cars and trucks all over the streets covered in debris.

I saw a video of the international terminal at the airport showing a bus driving past at a pace sufficient to send a huge bow wave across the footpath and into the terminal itself. So even professional drivers can be muppets.

I think before the next apocalypse I’ll need to get a dual cab ute. They seemed to be immune to the road conditions on Friday (Auckland), or at least were being driven that way (modest sample size).

Why break a window when Consulate visitors leave their cars like this for over 30 minutes!

It happens regularly!

Yeah talking to my across-the-road neighbour on Saturday, he was saying that the only flood damage he sustained was from bow-waves pushing massive volumes of water across his garden where eventually a retaining wall collapsed as a result of the constant battering from the water - many of which were from buses fording the flooded road at higher-than-sensible speeds.

Location: Main Highway Ellerslie
Time:  Friday evening

Left lane flooded
Right lane less so.

Me in Toyota Corolla - driving slowly through the shallows hoping not to get into trouble

Ute/SUV - Overtakes on the left through the deeper water at speed causing waves across the street.

Sure, their vehicle can do that...

Follow up to the Blue Hatchback above.

It is still there unattended after over 2 1/2 hours!

Called 105 and asked if they call registered owners of insecure vehicles, the call taker checked with his supervisor and said that they would.

I wonder how long before anyone returns to it?

(I'd like to know if I left my vehicle insecure)

Edit: Added: Finally returned to it 45 mins after the 105 call, and left!

Just had a run in with someone who sped up from behind me as I tried to get on the motorway and ran me off SH20 heading West. Then decided to pull in front of me and jump on the brakes because I had the audacity to protest about him running me out of a lane that was ending. It's a merge. You're meant to let people in. Where the hell was he expecting me to go? Pulling in front of me and jamming on the brakes was a nice touch too.

Perhaps someone who in their older years should probably know a bit better than that, as well as the tasteless flipping me off for a mistake that he'd clearly made. But he can keep trying that with people. Eventually someone will tail him to an intersection, pull him from his car and kick his head in. And he'll probably deserve it.

He sounds like a boomer. They had no real driving standards when they got their licence. Now they think they own the roads.

Hey, he wasn't driving a 4WD was he? πŸ˜‰

Ahh yes, lets forget about the people who are 99% of the problem.

And no, a shell company is not a real business, so Nigel can get on his bike.

Its pretty much the same way people can get exemptions to be able to drive at work when they have lost their license .
