joker97: when in Rome .. ?
k1wi: Speaking of red light 'running' one practice here in the US that has really annoyed motorists is a tenancy to shorten the amber phase at intersections with red light cameras
Dratsab:Here's a Time magazine article about the practices in Chicago:k1wi: Speaking of red light 'running' one practice here in the US that has really annoyed motorists is a tenancy to shorten the amber phase at intersections with red light cameras
Has that actually happened or is it an urban myth that's now colouring people's perception?
KiwiNZ: There seems to be an attitude that amber is just another shade of green and red another shade of amber. It's actually about safety guidelines. In particular, 1 second of amber for every 10mph of the posted speed limit.
KiwiNZ: Simple process, when approaching an intersection slow and prepare to stop even if green lighted. However the norm seems to be plant the right foot in case ones life is delayed by 60 seconds.I think you're confusing give way signs with a green traffic light signal, although I have no problem with you needing to slow down if that is what you need to do in order to decide whether or not it is safe to proceed through the intersection.

joker97:
when i lived in Melbourne it is not uncommon to have 50 lights before i reached my destination.
i wonder how many lights Aucklanders have to face. could explain the norms there, stating this without any prejudice.
k1wi: Speaking of red light 'running' one practice here in the US that has really annoyed motorists is a tenancy to shorten the amber phase at intersections with red light cameras, in order to increase revenue. That, combined with their tendency to not reduce accidents (in part because more people stop too suddenly), and there is huge backlash against them.

And a TV News report in Florida:

While there was a study by the AAA which showed the amber signal at NY red light camera intersections are up to 15% shorter than Federal safety guidelines.

Shocking stuff! I'm surprised a class action hasn't been launched against the municipalities. Hopefully our Councils won't be tempted to do the same thing... [/yeahright]
Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Things such as signs and lights are very tightly regulated here and must meet industry standards.
