Speaking of red light 'running' one practice here in the US that has really annoyed motorists is a tenancy to shorten the amber phase at intersections with red light cameras, in order to increase revenue.  That, combined with their tendency to not reduce accidents (in part because more people stop too suddenly), and there is huge backlash against them.

There seems to be an attitude that amber is just another shade of green and red another shade of amber.

Has that actually happened or is it an urban myth that's now colouring people's perception?

Here's a Time magazine article about the practices in Chicago:

http://time.com/3505994/red-light-camera-problems-tickets/

And a TV News report in Florida:

http://archive.wtsp.com/news/article/316418/8/Floridas-red-light-camera-intersections-issuing-more-tickets-after-yellow-light-times-quietly-reduced

While there was a study by the AAA which showed the amber signal at NY red light camera intersections are up to 15% shorter than Federal safety guidelines.

It's actually about safety guidelines.  In particular, 1 second of amber for every 10mph of the posted speed limit.

Simple process, when approaching an intersection slow and prepare to stop even if green lighted. However the norm seems to be plant the right foot in case ones life is delayed by 60 seconds.

I think you're confusing give way signs with a green traffic light signal, although I have no problem with you needing to slow down if that is what you need to do in order to decide whether or not it is safe to proceed through the intersection.

I am not condoning or excusing red light runners or drivers who speed up in order to beat the red.  I'm talking about specific instances where the amber light is reduced below a time which allows a driver to make the pretty complex decision of whether they are too close to the intersection in order to stop safely in time. You're being disingenuous if you're conflating the two.

Traffic safety is not only about drivers, but also road designers.

when i lived in Melbourne it is not uncommon to have 50 lights before i reached my destination.

i wonder how many lights Aucklanders have to face. could explain the norms there, stating this without any prejudice.

Blenheim has made a point of having no traffic lights — just strange roundabouts shared with trains, and with worrying filtering.  We actually have a leaflet at CAB that explains the Main Street roundabout because it is complicated.

Just about any local you ask has had near misses with the barrier coming down on them when the train comes through.  I've had it happen twice.  You hear the bell, but you are almost right on the track, so obviously want to get out of the way.  Next thing the barrier is coming down on you.  At certain times of the day sun strike makes it even worse.

I made this promo for the 2014 PSNZ National Convention.  It shows the train coming though the Main Street roundabout at 40 seconds.

Interesting story about the above video.  I originally cut it to Fanfare for the Common Man, but it would have cost a whopping NZ$1600 for the music.  I actually paid just $20 fr the music you can hear, from Pond5

In the US you can take a class action case against the councils / police to have the cameras removed and quite a few have been after it was found that the amber phase had been reduced  shorter that federal guidelines..

Shocking stuff! I'm surprised a class action hasn't been launched against the municipalities. Hopefully our Councils won't be tempted to do the same thing... [/yeahright]

Things such as signs and lights are very tightly regulated here and must meet industry standards.

There are no signs saying that there are red light cameras operating at intersections here in Auckland unlike Melbourne where they do have signs.   Even the old Auckland City council cameras had big signs saying that they were operating.   Painting them camouflage gray here also indicates to me that they are not for safety but revenue gathering..
