DonH: They recently finished double-laning (actually 2 separate channels) a 35KM stretch. It cost US$5bn and doubled the two-way navigable section.....

They obviously don't have any environmentalists standing in the way of progress - you can't even build a badly needed drinking water reservoir around here without an expensive fight.

Have you seen the Sinai?

The justification for further double tracking would come in the guise of decreased transit times. Time is money and since you saved more time, pay more money.

the universe had a hand in the refloat

those in the know saying the dredge did not have the reach to dredge under the ship. And the 10 rug boats did not have the capacity to pull. It was mainly the tide that did it

No I was serious. I hate when the little guy loses out when there are billions being thrown around. This happens a lot in poorer countries.

$900 million (?US) bill to ship owners

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/04/13/business/ever-given-seized-compensation-bill-intl/index.html

Anyone who has cargo on this vessel is gonna be really steamed, this standoff could drag out for years as insurance companies bicker over who should pay who what....

Given its the only leverage the Canal Company have I would expect the boat  (and its containers) to be going nowhere for a while...

$900 million (?US) bill to ship owners

Surely this is a fantasy? How many ships actually did the trek around the Cape of Good Hope rather than queuing up? Because the fees from those ships is the only income that the Canal owners have lost. Yes, there's a few million for maintenance and repairs. But $900M?

From https://safety4sea.com/suez-canal-transit-tolls-to-remain-the-same-in-2021/:

The Suez Canal Authority published traffic figures for 2020, noting that 18,829 ships with a net tonnage of 1.17 billion tonnes passed through the canal during 2020.

The revenues of Egypt’s Suez Canal reached 5.61 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Osama Rabie informed last week.

On average, that's $108M/week. The canal was blocked for 1 week. So, if *every* ship in that week went around the Cape, they would have lost income of $108M. $792M is a lot of maintenance and repairs.

... and Salvage Costs are added into it.

It would actually be more than "every ship in that week". Some captains might have decided on day 2 to go round the cape, other captains might have decided on day six & others still might have seen the queue build up & decided to go round the cape even though the ship has been cleared.
