kingdragonfly: I saw the New Zealand TV commercial for the Kia Niro EV.
It mentioned the EV freebate, but added a disclaimer "till 31 December."
That's misleading ,right? It continues until the government decides it doesn't, and I 've heard nothing about 31 December stoppage, correct?
Yes but that doesnt start until Jan 1st. Its not part of this initial scheme
RobDickinson:
The M3 is $169,000 base price vs $95,900 now, it takes 98 fuel too at about $140-150 a tank...
Plus will get a hefty extra fee next year at 220g/km co2
I don't think they really compete. Look at that price difference for starters.
While the Model 3 performance can beat the BMW M3 in a quarter mile drag race, and even on a track, the M3 is regarded as being a much more fun / desirable drivers car.
[edit] - but yes this recent price drop could well sway people at the margins. Somebody who's was eyeing a like for like upgrade to their M3 may be tempted away from the BMW brand that they have been loyal to for decades, and accept giving up "the ultimate driving machine" for faster acceleration and a $70k saving...

I don't think anyone would take their Model 3 to a track day either. Part of the fun of a track day is blowing through a tank of gas in an hour, nip out refuel and do it all again!
Interestingly, both cars weigh the same.
Model 3 perf has a track mode, with on the fly adjustments, lap timer, g meter video recorder and telemetry etc. Currently smashing the taycan in japan in their track series.

I've been in some fast cars before and I got taken for a hoon in a Taycan recently. I could not believe how quick it was, I couldn't keep my feet on the firewall! And they make a faster version than the one I was in!
This governments clean car package reminds me of the attached photo (plus have a read of the coal usage this year for the Huntly power station).

People do track days their model 3's. Below is a video from NZ.

That said, I don't think they would be as good as a BMW M3 as a track day car. Can consume 400km of range in 30mins on the track, and I think they are prone to overheating driveline stuff if run for an extended period.
At least there is a 50kW fast charger at hampton downs.
At least one company specializes in largely performance oriented parts to modify tesla's:

Early in NZ's ev days there a person that was tracking their 1st gen leaf too. (modified suspension and some kind of track specific tires)

will it last all of 3 laps?

The cartoon is highly deceptive. The much larger amount of smoke coming from the power station (solely connected to the EV), than from the diesel car, suggesting the emissions of the electric car are higher.
Studies have compared combustion engine car's with electric cars charging on 100% coal. They found that the combustion engine cars still emit even in this situation. In short, even though coal is a higher emitting fuel, this is more than made up for by the relative higher efficiency of a very large stationary power plant, vs a small engine that is often operating out of it's efficient band.
In NZ the comparison is even more ridiculous. Cira 70% - 80% of our power comes from renewable. We are only running Huntley coal hard now due to two simultaneous black swan events in the power market. A dry year and natural gas production issues.
It seems to do fine in Japan.

Plenty people track them in usa too.

Even on pure coal (which is not what is used in NZ) the CO2 emissions would be lower than for a diesel or petrol car.
A lot of the time the way people measure petrol/diesel vs EV is by looking at tailpipe emissions. That is not the full CO2 emission of diesel or petrol. The oil have to be extracted, transported, refined and then transported again before it gets in the car and can be used. All those steps produce a lot of CO2, yet the stated emission is grams per km from the burning of that fuel.

The overheating issue is with the older Model S, not the Model 3. The main issue with the Model 3 is the stock brakes will overheat. There's plenty of videos on YouTube of people taking their Model 3 to the Nürburgring - Tesla even installed a V3 Supercharger at the track
