Getting caught by a Red light camera is very easy, there is no need for signs. I prefer no cameras, more of the selfish dangerous red light runners will get caught.

KiwiNZ:it is why I don't pull off as soon as the light turns green.

That's just inconsiderate for everyone else.
I hope you're also not one of those drivers that can't find the pedal on the right and just mosey along at whatever speed your car idles at through the intersection and takes 500m to get to 50k?
What you should do is use your eyes and see that people are stopping... then you can go when lights actually go green instead of sitting there, impeding the flow of traffic and being one of the causes of congestion. wink

KiwiNZ: There seems to be an attitude that amber is just another shade of green and red another shade of amber.

Yep. I thought it was stop if you can safely, not go if there's no Police.

If I am at the front of the queue I wait a couple of seconds to make sure the  other line of cars is ACTUALLY stopping. I am sure a person behind me will not have their life devastated because they wait 2 seconds. I do this after close several time at being taken out
by stupid red light runners.

k1wi: Speaking of red light 'running' one practice here in the US that has really annoyed motorists is a tenancy to shorten the amber phase at intersections with red light cameras

Has that actually happened or is it an urban myth that's now colouring people's perception?
Here's a Time magazine article about the practices in Chicago:

http://time.com/3505994/red-light-camera-problems-tickets/

And a TV News report in Florida:

http://archive.wtsp.com/news/article/316418/8/Floridas-red-light-camera-intersections-issuing-more-tickets-after-yellow-light-times-quietly-reduced

While there was a study by the AAA which showed the amber signal at NY red light camera intersections are up to 15% shorter than Federal safety guidelines.

Shocking stuff! I'm surprised a class action hasn't been launched against the municipalities. Hopefully our Councils won't be tempted to do the same thing... [/yeahright]

Things such as signs and lights are very tightly regulated here and must meet industry standards.

There are no signs saying that there are red light cameras operating at intersections here in Auckland unlike Melbourne where they do have signs.   Even the old Auckland City council cameras had big signs saying that they were operating.   Painting them camouflage gray here also indicates to me that they are not for safety but revenue gathering..

Conspiracy theory?

If Joe Driver knew  there was a camera and knew it was not operating, he would drive accordingly. If he knew it was there, but did not know if operating, he would drive to avoid a ticket.

Imagine for the sake of argument, that every intersection in NZ had a camera, no way to know it was operating, I can guarantee that speed and lights behaviour would be superb.

I was always told to drive based on every other driver was a potential accident waiting to happen. I don't drive like a granny (sorry Granny) but that I drive safe, and everyone else may not. Prevention better than cure

There are also no signs at the dairy saying that undercover police are parked across the road, so no armed robberies tonight. Entrapment, plain and simple!

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

A good lively discussion here.

Interesting how it has changed from the Police speed campaign Summer 2014/2015 to amber and red traffic light jumpers. About the speed campaign, one has to wonder why 17 people died on the roads during the holiday period under the zero tolerance (except speedcameras) campaign and yet during the holiday period last Christmas, when there was an overall 4 km/h tolerance, only 7 died. Had they left the tolerance at 4 km/h overall might we have seen another single figure death toll on our roads? Perhaps people were distracted looking at their speedos more often that contributed to the higher toll. We will never know for sure.

Now about the amber/red light jumpers. Here in New Plymouth on our one way streets we have a set of lights on each street that has small amber and red lights mounted on the back of the main lights so that the police can stand about 100 metres down the street and pull over anyone that goes through the intersection when the small red light comes on.

Lias: Not PC to say it, but the number on the sign is the minimum I expect anyone in front of me to be doing. MINIMUM.

Not PC? Sounds to me like a downright intolerant attitude of other road users who might happen to be operating within the law.

I suggest you read your road code - the bit about it being a maximum and that the road conditions might dictate that a slower speed is required...
