KiwiNZ:it is why I don't pull off as soon as the light turns green.
KiwiNZ: There seems to be an attitude that amber is just another shade of green and red another shade of amber.

That's just inconsiderate for everyone else.
I hope you're also not one of those drivers that can't find the pedal on the right and just mosey along at whatever speed your car idles at through the intersection and takes 500m to get to 50k?
What you should do is use your eyes and see that people are stopping... then you can go when lights actually go green instead of sitting there, impeding the flow of traffic and being one of the causes of congestion.
old3eyes:scuwp:Dratsab:k1wi:Dratsab:Here's a Time magazine article about the practices in Chicago:k1wi: Speaking of red light 'running' one practice here in the US that has really annoyed motorists is a tenancy to shorten the amber phase at intersections with red light cameras
Has that actually happened or is it an urban myth that's now colouring people's perception?

And a TV News report in Florida:
http://archive.wtsp.com/news/article/316418/8/Floridas-red-light-camera-intersections-issuing-more-tickets-after-yellow-light-times-quietly-reduced
While there was a study by the AAA which showed the amber signal at NY red light camera intersections are up to 15% shorter than Federal safety guidelines.
Shocking stuff! I'm surprised a class action hasn't been launched against the municipalities. Hopefully our Councils won't be tempted to do the same thing... [/yeahright]
Things such as signs and lights are very tightly regulated here and must meet industry standards.
There are no signs saying that there are red light cameras operating at intersections here in Auckland unlike Melbourne where they do have signs. Even the old Auckland City council cameras had big signs saying that they were operating. Painting them camouflage gray here also indicates to me that they are not for safety but revenue gathering..

If I am at the front of the queue I wait a couple of seconds to make sure the other line of cars is ACTUALLY stopping. I am sure a person behind me will not have their life devastated because they wait 2 seconds. I do this after close several time at being taken out
by stupid red light runners.

Conspiracy theory?
If Joe Driver knew there was a camera and knew it was not operating, he would drive accordingly. If he knew it was there, but did not know if operating, he would drive to avoid a ticket.
Imagine for the sake of argument, that every intersection in NZ had a camera, no way to know it was operating, I can guarantee that speed and lights behaviour would be superb.
Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
Lias: Not PC to say it, but the number on the sign is the minimum I expect anyone in front of me to be doing. MINIMUM.
