Have you jumped a few decimals?
Random source last year
"Writing on LinkedIn, container shipping expert Lars Jensen noted that the route chosen by CMA CGM is more than 3,000 nautical miles longer than via the three-week Suez Canal route and the speed for the new journey has been increased by more than two knots despite the added five days to the schedule equating to an approximate $200,000 higher fuel bill for each ship. However, Suez Canal tolls are in the region of $400,000 to $500,000 per transit."

On average, that's $108M/week. The canal was blocked for 1 week. So, if *every* ship in that week went around the Cape, they would have lost income of $108M. $792M is a lot of maintenance and repairs.
It would actually be more than "every ship in that week". Some captains might have decided on day 2 to go round the cape, other captains might have decided on day six & others still might have seen the queue build up & decided to go round the cape even though the ship has been cleared.
Right. But, on average, there's 360 ships a week going through the Suez Canal. And according to Wikipedia "By the time traffic through the Suez Canal resumed, more than 400 ships were waiting" i.e. about one week's worth. So it would suggest that very few ships changed to going round Africa *during* the week of closure... they all went into the queue. Maybe a few more rerouted in the following weeks, assuming it took that long to clear the queue.
Oh, and Wikipedia says that $300M of the claimed cost was for "loss of reputation".

This page suggests that the Suez Canal had come close to pricing itself out of the market in 2020. So probably you would be OK to assume that costs of going round Africa are similar to the cost of going through the Canal.
I think the main benefit of the Canal is the time it saves.... 13 or so days for a ship that travels at 15 knots.
an unimportant fact of the day about the Suez ...
there was a First Officer who was forced to stay on an abandoned ship without basic facilities after their owners abandoned the ship at the south entrance of the Suez when it was detained by Egypt and the Egyptian authorities appointed the first officer as guardian of the ship forcing him to stay on it since May 2017
Only after mediation by some international group which negotiated an Egyptian to take his place as guardian was he then allowed to go home last week, and he still has unpaid wages

The cargo ship was held because it had expired safety equipment and classification certificates.
It should have been easy enough to resolve.
I'm guessing it became difficult when they failed to pay the required baksheesh.
The Aman's owners, Tylos Shipping and Marine Services, told the BBC they had tried to help Mohammed but that their hands were tied.
"I can't force a judge to remove the legal guardianship," a representative told us. "And I can't find a single person on this planet - and I've tried - to replace him."
It's interesting to note that the owners could have resolved this years ago by paying what they owed for fuel, but this concept seems foreign to them. Or, I guess, by selling the ship.

There's an even worse case of this, the Yellow Fleet, which was trapped in the Suez Canal from the end of the Six-day War until 1975, eight years in total, although the last crew were allowed to leave in 1972. They built their own community, had sporting events, issued stamps, showed films, and so on, there's several books about it.
