jonherries: Hey guys,

Worth noting the bus review web survey is up for those in the Eastern Suburbs - they are also asking questions about Snapper etc.

https://haveyoursay.gw.govt.nz/busreview

Jon

Beware the BIG F-you at the end of the survey if you have an existing GW Your Say acct. Tick the wrong box and your entire response is lost. Or maybe that's their plan?

I guess I'll have to head back to my desktop to start again from https://haveyoursay.gw.govt.nz/

Yep that went into my survey response - it is concerning how difficult it is to find from their website (easy from google).

Did you see all the responses to the Q&A were the same?

This is interesting, there was also a comment I saw in another article about the total patronage volumes being used rather than peak and off peak as large increases in off peak have masked a drop in peak service passengers.

IMHO this is one of the most pointless stories I've read about the bus troubles. It's like saying people who don't get sick shouldn't pay tax to fund hospitals because they don't need them.

Wellington is always going to have higher numbers of passengers (and therefore utilisation) than the Hutt or Kapiti, and the direct result of that is that revenues will he higher. That's just simply how public transport networks operate.

Likewise zones around cities are always more dense and then larger as you head out of a city - once again that's just how public transport networks work. I don't see people in Sydney ranting that it costs them $3.61 for a 5 min train journey yet it costs somebody 2 1/2 hours away in Newcastle $8.86

Yes the bus network is still broen.. But the whole basis of this story is just totally strange.

Ok, it is not a hot day (Metservice says 10c now) but having a couple of windows open is good to get the stale air (and people's smells) out of the bus. So I was surprised when I see a woman (on top deck) closing all the windows, on her way out of the bus when we stopped at a large (Johnsonville) hub.

So yes, she closed the windows and left the bus. It wasn't even because she was cold (perhaps doing this for a friend?) because she wasn't even staying...

The cold weather has highlighted a problem with the electric buses: No heating or forced air circulation, just small opening windows. With a full load on a cold, wet morning, the condensation streams down the windows. Most unpleasant.

It really just defies belief how anybody could think a bus with no air conditioning is an option. Yes we know why it can't have it due to the power usage, but you've been able to spot those buses a mile away since they entered service last year not because of the size or the single rear axle but because the windows are either fogged up or if it's summer everybody is miserable because it's like a sauna.

When Darran Ponter came to one of our residents' association meetings a few months ago he said that the electric double deckers currently in service are on trial, and hence configured as prototypes. I asked him 'when will we know whether the trial was successful and what will happen if not', and he indicated that the ones currently in service are performing well and more would continue to be rolled out.

I think it's time to stop calling it a trial, and get air conditioning retro-fitted but I can't see it happening with all the other problems that are still to be resolved.

I was told there were never any plans to ever retrofit it to the existing buses - the hit on battery capacity was simply too great.

I can understand the lack of heating or cooling. But fan-forced air circulation (with an optional heat exchanger) would go a long way to improving passenger comfort without significantly increasing the load on the battery.

In wet weather the Electric DDs are like a trip back to the 1970s, full of condensation and passengers swiping windows to see out.. the upper deck even more so....

At a minimum the next batch need to have a heatpump dehumidifier...

From the article:

Greater Wellington Regional Council's sustainable transport committee chairperson, Barbara Donaldson, said the changes were made to provide certainty for commuters.

Greater certainty that their buses won't be coming?
