MikeAqua:

I'm saying it won't do that with 53 tonnes or it won't carry 53 tonnes and people will stick to diesel/hydrogen B-trains.

Big trucks don't refuel every 5.5 hours.

That said I'm sure there will be use cases for the semi, just not line hauling heavy loads in NZ.

When will we see them available for shipping to NZ?

It's not designed to be carrying 53 tonnes so no, it won't be. What are the most common load weights carried by trucks in NZ?

I don't think you quite grasped where the 5.5 hours comes from. That's the maximum time a driver can drive non-stop before they need to stop for 30 mins. If the truck can drive that distance then it doesn't matter how much range it has beyond that.

When will we see them? Probably in greater numbers before we see more than the token hydrogen truck here in NZ.

Acceleration is impressive (anyone who owned a Tamiya car knows that).  But that's were it ends.

It will be outperformed by almost any ICE because it will be stationary and charging while the ICE is still eating miles.  That's the point.  A Suzuki swift would pants it over a day's legal driving.

I have two vehicles.  One cost less than 60k the other less than 40k.  Neither was the 'base model' (shudder).  The Model 3 cost $68k (according to Tesla).  Both my cars out-range it. Neither out-accelerates it.  One will out-corner it.

Now if I could afford the Audi Quattro BEV ... I'd buy one.  But I think if had that much tin to burn I'd rather a GTR.

It is a factual statement that I find myself overtaking a lot of BEVs.  They are usually being driven slowly and are a short vehicle (vs a truck or bus) so easy to pass.  Obviously I'm talking about the open road.

heh heh ... i keep wondering why don't they make a petrol/diesel powered electric car ... then you have best of both worlds without the weight

as for me i don't see a lot of BEV on the open road

PS which car out corners a Tesla M3? bmw M3?

I'm sure you see a lot more BEVs than FCEVs 😉

As in an electric transmission like trains do? The issue is that you still don't get instant power like with BEVs, because you have to rev up the engine before applying power. That can be fixed with a small battery pack, but then you've basically just got a hybrid with 3x the motor-generator. And you want the battery anyway for regen braking.

Tesla's semi's range is for 36 tonnes gross mass (truck plus load).  In NZ on major roads the limit is 53-tonnes so you have to majorly discount that range. If 53 tonnes isn't possible with a semi then may as well stick with ICE B-Trains.

The issue isn't so much gross mass as payload. What's the empty weight of a Tesla truck vs an ICE truck? I suspect that a Tesla will be heavier. But the bottom line will be The Bottom Line... what it costs to cart a tonne of goods from Auckland to Wellington (or wherever) on a Tesla vs an ICE. If it costs less on a 36-tonne Tesla than a 53-tonne ICE, then that's a win.

Tesla Semi isnt farr off a normal diesel truck from what I understand, but we dont have details.

USA and Europe have given an increased weight allowance to bev trucks anyhow to make up the difference.

either way, these BEV trucks are only good for 1st world countries with the appropriate infrastructure.

try getting these guys to use BEV trucks (i hazard a guess, > 50% of world population)

No never been out the front door.

You expect these relics to be replaced with FCEV trucks and $2-3m refuelling stations?

I expect there's a lot fewer tonne-miles done by those trucks, even if they serve more of the population.
